Took a long time to get interesting
Revisado: 04-11-23
Literally waited until the last 1.5 hours to get interesting. World building is cool, but the storyline is super muddled by weird POV from characters I’m not even sure we’re supposed to like, as well as obsessively romantic teenage thoughts. The narrator doesn’t help make the protagonist seem more likable. Idk, I kind of want to see where this goes but don’t want to use a credit to slough through more of this.

I love living in this universe
Revisado: 03-24-23
There is something so compelling about these stories and these characters! I loved the two new voices we got in this story. Just like her other characters in the Star Kingdom series, they are wonderful to relate to and get to know. And of course, the impeccable Fred Burman is a delight to listen to. I would love to hear more from them in the future!

THIS👏🏼WHOLE👏🏼SERIES👏🏼
Revisado: 02-05-23
I don’t have enough words at my disposal to adequately express how much I love this series. Fred Berman makes this 17 hour adventure fly by. His command of voice acting is excellent. And the story ✨ it’s been a long time since I found a series with world building that I was this drawn into. The way she fleshes out each character and gives them their own storylines but takes the time to make them make sense is wonderful. The way the characters interact with each other and grow and change in their relationships? Also realistic. Rache and Casmir interacting never fails to make me giggle. I just love how much thought and natural flow went into a well-paced, exciting, pithy, in-depth series, and this conclusion was it’s crowning glory.
TL;DR: I’m obsessed, characters are perfect, narrator is wonderful, conclusion is *chef’s kiss*.

Suren, child queen of the Court of Teeth, and the one person with power over her mother, fled to the human world. There, she lives feral in the woods. I didn’t know I was waiting for this!
Revisado: 01-07-23
First of all, I want to say that I was very worried that I wouldn’t like this narrator as much but she was WONDERFUL. Except for a few names that were pronounced differently (that really didn’t take long to adjust to) everything else was the same from series one and she did an excellent job with Oak.
The story is a beautiful continuation of this universe. Not only do we get a look into things that were happening during the first series, but we get to see Oak grown into the prince he should be. It is very satisfying to see that his personality is a healthy mix of his family. Don’t expect to see a lot of Jurdan in this book, but Holly Black does an excellent job of weaving a new tale and new characters that you will love just as much. Though (in my opinion) a little darker than the first, I think this series has the potential to be just as captivating as the first.
Spoilers ahead!
I didn’t know I needed a childhood friends trope in Folk of the Air but I DID. Holly Black laid it out beautifully. It is incredibly satisfying to see the man Oak is growing into - someone with a personality akin to Locke but with the heart of Cardan and skills from his family. And Ren’s backstory??? I had no idea?? It’s making me feel really bad for writing her off like Vivi in series 1.
Anyway, I’m staggering after the ending, and I know this one just came out, but I’m chomping at the bit (or bridle, as it were) for the next one.

I’m obsessed
Revisado: 10-20-22
The cast? Incredible.
The heist? Iconic.
The humor? Perfection.
The romantic subplots? Incomparable.
The overall writing? Unique for every character, but still good with every character, which is HARD.
Anyway, I’m obsessed with this duology and I will never stop recommending it to people.

Totally Unexpected Find!
Revisado: 08-06-22
So glad I stumbled upon this absolute adrenaline rush of a book! It was incredibly engaging, a great opening to a series with fun world building. Spensa is quirky, but not in the cutesy way a lot of feminine characters can fall into - she’s just splendidly odd. I loved getting to see her and her relationships grow and shift through this epic story. Like many of us, as Spensa grows, her perceptions of the world are challenged, and she must decide how to respond to the shifting sands under her (or perhaps, the shifting debris above).

Dramatic and Captivating
Revisado: 03-28-22
The full cast used for the transcripts and interviews really added a radio-drama element to this story! There were times I had to pause it while driving because the story would draw me in so much that I would forget which world I was supposed to be participating in. I hope you give this book a try - I really tried to make some guesses about the culprit but the author did great at stringing me along, right to the end.

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

Just Okay
Revisado: 12-30-21
I don’t know, the story started very well and was very intriguing but as it went on the main character got too unrelatable. I felt like she moved on too quickly from horrible trauma back to romance brain. She felt too single minded maybe? And him too, a lot of the way he disregarded some of her (personally, justified) anger and defiance towards him felt belittled. Not sure, that could just be me. I also really struggled with the narrator’s voice of the main character. I felt like she made her narration of the main character a little boring. Her other characters were very well done, not sure what happened with the main character. But I finished the whole thing, so it wasn’t the worst! Just not my favorite and I probably won’t go back for more.

Really interesting expansion
Revisado: 12-02-21
I enjoyed the first book - the narrator does a good job shifting voices and reading naturally, the story was interesting and had some mysteries to keep us invested, and the concept about multiple realities is one I find fascinating.
This second installment was a great example of what a sequel should be - it answered a few of our lingering questions from book one and expanded on the universe (or, multiple universes, as it were) that the author had created. We get more characters, more background, more depth.
Loved the ending - lots of emotion! Excited to see what book 3 brings.
