Last Story is very racist
Revisado: 06-21-23
The first few stories were pretty good, I really enjoyed the one about the cat, but the last story was awful. It was one of the most openly racist things I’ve ever heard.

Heartwarming with Good Morals
Revisado: 03-20-23
This was a wonderful story about a young girl who gets into the school of her dreams. There, she meets new friends, and learns valuable lessons about doing a job well, teamwork, overcoming wealth inequality, and sticking up for her friends.
The whole story is uplifting as Jummy learns about herself and the world, makes some mistakes, and grows as a person.
The story’s setting also helps readers learn about Nigeria and Nigerian culture.
Highly recommend for grade school or early junior high readers.

Good but A Christmas Carol had a better message
Revisado: 12-28-20
I enjoyed this story but I thought it was weaker than A Christmas Carol. The story has two morals, 1) the poor are good people who are not responsible for their circumstances, and 2) it's those in power who are enforcing their oppression. Toby, a poor kind man, is the one who has to learn this lesson, freeing himself of self-judgment. However, his perspective and self-depreciation cause the story to focus on the first moral, the humanity and goodness of the poor, which should be obvious, instead of focusing on the second moral, the corruption of the rich. It would have been a better story if it was about a rich man learning the error of his ways... but that was A Christmas Carol.

It’s filled with longing and old magic
Revisado: 10-22-19
I love this story. It’s strengths are in the realism of the characters and their relationships and the dreamlike nature of the magic they seek.
This is the only book I’ve reread in years.

Still one of my favorites books
Revisado: 03-11-18
This was my second run through of this book, six years later, and it still holds as one of my all time favorites. It’s one of the best ‘hard fantasy’ novels I’ve ever come across outside of Brandon Sanderson’s works.
Jonathan Stroud is a master of world building, tonal shifts, and making you really feel what the characters are feeling.
The world building is complex and so well done. The overarching plot of the story keeps gaining more depth but still makes you feel like you almost could have figured it out the mysteries on your own. There is never a full moment, with every chapter being exciting for a different reason or adventure-of-the-hour.
He does a fantastic job contrasting the warm cozy feeling of the friends at home with the creeping wrongness of the undead.
The characters are all wonderful and lovable. It’s not a character-driven story but Jonathan Stroud does a fantastic job making them feel real and multidimensional. Your happy when they’re happy, angry when they’re angry, and sad when they’re sad.
Overall, this is one of my favorite books, it’s intended for teens but the story is so well done it holds up wonderfully for adult audiences. Honestly it’s better than most fiction I’ve read in general. My only warning is that it could be scary for some audiences.
