Historia
Samantha Sweet is back at Sweet's Sweets, turning out her amazing cakes and pastries for the busy holiday season, when Emily Plankhurst, the new young librarian in town, stops in. Emily tells Sam a strange story involving a hidden niche in the library revealed to her in a vision, supposedly, by her dead grandmother. It turns out the hidden space contains a rare painting, The Ghost of Christmas, which was believed to have been destroyed in a fire twenty-five years ago at the luxury home of a hedge fund billionaire.

great book on a great series
Revisado: 04-30-25
per her usual style, Connie Shelton has produced in " The Ghost of Christmas Sweet" strong, likable characters, an intriguing plot, some underlying themes for those inclined to dive a little deeper than the basic plot level--overall, a heartwarming engaging story.

Historia
This audiobook focuses on the emotional and inspirational support gifted children need to accomplish the goals they or you have set. It’s not necessarily easy to be gifted, with all the high expectations and a brain that races at night when you are trying to sleep and are actually coming up with a million ideas to implement. The best ways to motivate your gifted children are here, as well as tactics to deal with bullies, which often target more sensitive and intelligent children.

Frankly, this book is weird. It purports to be about gifted children and to cover definition, motivation, and techniques to help parents understand their gifted children and how to effectively work with them.
On the one hand, this book, particularly the first few chapters, gives some accurate information, but several things happen as the reader continues:
The bias of the writer becomes more and more obvious, the information is lopsided, all too often giving far more weight to the perspectives of private schooling as opposed to speaking specifically to give to children and giving a balanced view of both private and public education. By the last chapter the reader has the distinct impression that the author either knows very little about education in general or has no respect for it or for the people who deliver it.
Weirdly, in the last chapter the author seems to have lost all desire to talk about gifted kids and spends her time speaking to special education in general, concentrating on students who are being bullied, with significant emphasis on students who are being bullied by teachers. That's an example of what I mean when I say it's lopsided: while bullying is definitely something to be dealt with, and is serious, in the context of this book it just seems like a rant from someone who wants to get something out of her system.
There is also a lot of repetition of those accurate, if VERY basic definitions---but very little variety in suggestions for implementing the techniques she mentions. She repeats a few basic statements over and over.
Speaking as s a retired gifted facilitator, a secondary English teacher of all ability levels, and a teacher of all grade levels from kindergarten through community college, I cannot imagine myself handing this book to a parent to read if they were having problems understanding how to deal with any student, much less a gifted student. It might be useful as a sort of bullet point list of terms to discuss with the parent, but that would be pretty much all of it. The teacher, facilitator, counselor, etc. would need to implement a great deal of expansion of the statements in this book for it to be useful---and I think I could find resources that would do a better job for even basic outlining of concerns of gifted children and their parents.

Historia
The irascible A. J. Fikry, owner of Island Books - the only bookstore on Alice Island - has already lost his wife. Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go. One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children’s section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her.

strong characters, confusinh plot
Revisado: 02-20-25
I am a retired secondary English teacher, and this is without any doubt the weirdest book I have ever read. that is not to say I dislike it, but I will say that I tried several times to stop reading it and put it aside, and every time I went back until I had finished it. I read it for a book club and when we had the discussion I hadn't even finished it the first time, and I found that most of the other readers in the club had the same areas of confusion I did.
The basic plot is straightforward enough: a combination love story and mystery which follows a series of very strong characters, both positive and negative characters, throughout a lifetime spent with books.
The confusing element is the introduction of each chapter. Each chapter is titled with the title of a well-known short story. interestingly, the first and the last chapters are titled with stories by Ronald Dahl. each chapter begins with a brief commentary about the story the titles it. It is only at the end that the reader is made privy to the reason those stories are being used and commented upon.
This novel is exceptionally well written, with strong, well developed characters. It does require a reader with no small amount of patience.

Historia
Hannah is thrilled to be marrying Ross Barton, her college crush. And her excitement only grows when she learns he'll be able to join her on her trip to New York City for the Food Channel's dessert chef contest. They get a taste of the Big Apple before Hannah wins the Hometown Challenge and the producers bring all the contestants to Lake Eden to tape the remainder of the show. It's nerve-wracking enough being judged by Alain Duquesne, a celebrity chef with a nasty reputation. But it's even more chilling to find him stabbed to death in the Lake Eden Inn's walk-in cooler.

This is a hard review to summarize with the star system
Revisado: 02-16-24
I love this, I like the plotting, And I like the characters-- With one huge exception. The character of Dolores is without doubt the most obnoxious and unpleasant character. I have encountered in a lifetime of reading and decades as a secondary teacher of english with a heavy emphasis on literature. I simply cannot imagine why the author, Who does so many things right, Has chosen to make dolores so exceptionally negative and unpleasant. I almost stopped reading halfway through the first titlebut I had second thoughts and I stuck with it, Is trying to just ignore dolores and her entitled, Is self absorbed, And autocratic ways. Every time the author seems to be allowing Dolores to begin to develop into a halfway acceptable human being, She reverts to the prototype of making this character. What my nawhat minority of writing professors urged us to be careful not to do-- She returns to the characteristics of dolores that are overwhelmingly negative. I always want hannah and her sisters to get up on their hind legs and tell dolores where to get off. I come from a pretty comfortable family life. But I would never have allowed my mother to behave toward me. The way dolores behaves and I would never treat my children the way she treachers. It is clear that everything about dofirst. It's seen in her eyes as a reflection of her with no real concern for anyone else. The scene where she blackmails Hannah. In this titleto write a wedding biography and worst of all , set up a gift registry is absolutely the ultimate example of this. I will keep reading the series. And I will to keep trying to ignore dolores but it surely would be nice to see Have a
An epiphany that really had a positive and ongoing effect on her character.

I like the characters and I enjoyed the book but without the involvement I had in earlier ones. The plot feels really underdeveloand it may have to do with the lack of the dog show threads of the earlier books.

Need a lot of work
Revisado: 07-02-23
I believe in Encouraging writers, But the only thing I can think of to say is that I would encourage this author and the narrator to find a community College for course work in narrative writing and speakinf/reading. The plot needs filling out, The characters need depth And the pace Needs to pick up. In addition, the narrator needs some training for this kind of work.
