A different kind of space opera!
Revisado: 12-26-22
How refreshing to have the protagonist be, of all things, a PhD linguist, who turns out to be strong, resourceful, a talented singer, and a pretty good strategist. I could have been just as happy with the story without the sex scene, though. Implying it would have been as effective, and not all of us want to read/hear it.

Very good story and narration except for malaprops
Revisado: 02-25-21
I've read these stories multiple times, and while sick decided to add this second volume to my library. This series as well as the author's other works offer solid Christian values, sometimes with multiple points of view between characters which I find help me to grow in my own faith. This is also part of a repeated theme in Ms Havig's work, looking at our relation to and stewardship of God's creation which I find very appealing.
The narrator does a reasonably good job on character voices, but comes up with quite a few malaprops (for example, "difference" instead of "deference", immediately followed by "slave" for "salve"--completely distorting the nature of the boss-employee relationship) and other mispronunciations. Where is the producer to catch these?

A different story, in many ways, from the original
Revisado: 02-05-21
Much was left out, and things were added--and I'm not talking about the necessities of conveying the story entirely through dialog. The changes are fair enough, when an author revisits a work to reconceptualize it years after first writing it.
The biggest single disappointment was the use of a young man to play the protagonist, as he sounded much too old and mature for the boy, who we experience almost entirely between the ages of 6 and 11; Ender as a young man was only for the last minute or two of the entire production. For the entire rest of it Ender hadn't yet hit puberty! He was a genius child, but he was still a child, and should have had at least a soprano voice, if not necessarily being performed by a child. Some things in a narrator's performance one becomes accustomed too over the course of the whole, but this was a mis-casting, and it did not stop being frustrating and distracting.

Raymond Jaffe feels like he doesn’t belong. Not with his mother’s new family. Not as a weekend guest with his father and his father’s wife. Not at school, where he’s an outcast. After his best friend moves away, Raymond has only two real connections: to the feral cat he’s tamed and to a blind ninety-two-year-old woman in his building who’s introduced herself with a curious question: Have you seen Luis Velez?

Beautiful story

With the perfect narrator, able to voice the range of uncertain emotions of an adolescent boy and a very elderly woman. Amazing range! He added so much to the emotionally complex narrative. Another wonderful story by Catherine Ryan Hyde.

Is there credible proof that Jesus of Nazareth really is the Son of God? In The Case for Christ, Lee Strobel, former legal editor of the Chicago Tribune and New York Times bestselling author, retraces his own spiritual journey from atheism to faith and builds a captivating case for Christ's divinity. In this revised and updated edition of The Case for Christ, Strobel cross-examines a dozen experts with doctorates from schools such as Cambridge, Princeton, and Brandeis, asking hard-hitting questions—and taking a deeper look at the evidence from the fields of science, philosophy, and history.

Excellent review of convincing evidence
Revisado: 10-15-19
No, it's not absolute proof: one still has to have faith, after all! Yes, it's evangelical in its biases, But as a liberal Christian I still find this much more convincing than the so-called Jesus Seminar with their biases and assumptions (and yes, I've read as much of their writings as I could stomach). As a scholar myself in one of the less provable disciplines, I understand working with sources that are not definitive, not comprehensive, not provable, and still being able to make cogent arguments with clear conclusions. And I'm not working with 2,000 year old sources! Rev. Strobel has made as clear and convincing overall case as, I suspect, one could make, reviewing scholarship that answers quite a number of the most crucial issues in an accessible format (interviews with experts in each field). Very, very helpful volume, which I hope the non-believers in my life will respond to.

Best-selling author of Too Long a Stranger and Julia's Last Hope, Janette Oke is loved for her inspirational novels. In Once Upon a Summer, Oke weaves the tender tale of 12-year-old, Joshua, who has been raised by his 18-year-old aunt and their grandparents. Historia
The Gospels are dramatic and incredibly wet, set in a rich maritime culture on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Yet we've missed much of this perspective - until now. Leslie Leyland Fields, a seasoned Alaskan fisherwoman, leads us across the waters of time and culture out onto the Sea of Galilee, through a rugged season of commercial fishing with her family in Alaska, and through the waters of the New Testament beside the ragtag fishermen disciples.

Inspiring and insightful, one of the best books...
Revisado: 11-13-17
I've read in years. I've just finished my third time through, listening to it for fifteen minutes each night before I go to sleep.
I purchased this in the spring while looking for a book about the Galilee of Jesus' day and found it to be so much more than I expected. It's not just that it's written by a woman, although her combination of personal experience in the Pacific waters off Alaska and walking and fishing in Galilee are to the point. It's also that it's more of an extended reflection, not teaching or preaching. Her experience as a fisherman: when she talks about the passion that fishermen have for their work and the complete unlikeliness of Jesus' first followers to leave their nets, she brings her points home with insight, born of thirty years personal experience and her profound faith.
The narration is excellent, and it adds much to the book. I recommend it highly.

An enjoyable, clean, not graphic mystery
Revisado: 04-12-16
Along the principle of "You are what you eat" I believe that we are what we fill our minds with, so I choose not to read things with foul language, explicit sex or graphic violence. This story fulfilled those requirements enjoyably, with very competent narration.
