Historia
The year is 878, and the Saxons of Wessex, under King Alfred, have defeated the Danes to keep their kingdom free. Uhtred, the dispossessed son of a Northumbrian lord, helped Alfred win that victory, but now he is disgusted by Alfred's lack of generosity. Narrator is terrible
Revisado: 10-31-22
Dramatization and multiple voice characterizations should not be attempted by this narrator. Narrator’s voice and style could work for other subject matter, but it doesn’t work for this story.

Good book, terrible narrator
Revisado: 06-27-11
I enjoy this series of books, the characters, and the story twists, but Nick Sullivan is by far the worst dramatic narrator I've heard. He's developed terrible ( and superficially stereotyped ) voices, without much understanding of the storyline, and no acting ability. It's very tough to listen through. He may be good with non-fiction, non-dramatic narration, but not here. I'm not looking forward to the next book.

Historia
In 1864, after Union general William Tecumseh Sherman burned Atlanta, he marched his sixty thousand troops east through Georgia to the sea, and then up into the Carolinas. The army fought off Confederate forces and lived off the land, pillaging the Southern plantations, taking cattle and crops for their own, demolishing cities, and accumulating a borne-along population of freed blacks and white refugees until all that remained was the dangerous transient life of the uprooted, the dispossessed, and the triumphant.

More narrators like this, please...

Exceptionally well written; Doctorow has mastered the English language and tells a fascinating, fact-based tale which kept me engrossed. The narrator is the best I've heard in an audiobook and he truly brings the characters to life.
