Historia
Caroline Overington's stunning fiction debut is a multi-voiced novel centred around a child's death and its terrible repercussions. In 1982 Victorian police were called to a home on a housing estate an hour west of Melbourne. There, they found a five-year-old boy lying still and silent on the carpet. There were no obvious signs of trauma, but the child, Jacob, died the next day. The story made the headlines, and hundreds attended the funeral. Few people were surprised when the boy's mother and her boyfriend went to prison for the crime.

Utterly terrible
Revisado: 01-05-22
Despite a stellar performance from Zinzi (Australian parents will probably have some idea who this is), this book is utterly terrible. The same story, retold a zillion times from multiple perspectives. Overington was a journalist and perhaps this is way she struggles with telling a compelling story in more than 700 words.

Historia
On 3 December 1976, just weeks before Bob Marley was to play the Smile Jamaica Concert to ease political tensions, seven gunmen from West Kingston stormed his house. Marley survived and went on to perform at the free concert. Not a lot was recorded about the fate of the seven gunmen, but much has been said, whispered and sung about in the streets of West Kingston.

Absolutely amazing story AND narration

Cannot follow story.
Revisado: 01-23-16
This is probably my own fault for trying to listen to a Man Booker prize winning book (rather than reading it) but I cannot for the life of me follow this story. The performance is full of slang and heavy Jamaican accents. This is appropriate of course but non Jamaicans may struggle! It was sounding like an interesting story so I may try and read it the old fashioned way.
