An interesting story with too many tangents

This is the story of a very unusual situation: a mother who had her lover murdered, and her son, who years later killed his lover. The mother was a strong character with unusual interests and behaviors but her personality and background were not well fleshed out. In other words, I wanted to know more about her. I didn't find the son as interesting, but the focus was mostly on his crime and trial rather than how he got the way he was. And the parallels between the two characters could have been explored more instead of tangents about lawyers and gangs. How did the mother's personality affect the son and his approach to his relationships? A structure of chapters alternating between the two crimes would have served the author well.

Two and a half hours was all I could take. I found the subject of the book so awful she made me want to spit, especially when she lied to the church about wanting to adopt a girl that she really only wanted for free housekeeping and childcare. The way she treated people and the way she did business certainly does not speak well of her upbringing. The research is solid and the author was good at pulling together a huge amount of source material, including Wood's copious lies.

The narrator's voice is so sugary she would be great at children's books, but I did not enjoy it. I did laugh every time she said the name "Doug" because to my ear it sounded like she called him "Dog."

I gave this book six hours before deciding it was too boring to finish. It's not even that much about Scientology; perhaps the title was chosen because of the interest today in the group. Hall writes well and reads well, but her life is not that interesting and I really disliked the opportunities she found to sing. Her parents were particularly annoying. I have read numerous moving stories of people searching for meaning and spiritual understanding. This isn't one of them. As the Scientologists would say: Flunk.
