A hoity-toity too-ralooo....your local friendly Paddy here. If you are Irish, like me, don't. Just don't. I can't decide what's worse: The narrator's appalling Irish accent; or the writer's understanding of Irish people. If you are going to write a central character as an Irish person do some effing research. We don't have middle school, it's either Primary School or Secondary School. There might be one person on the whole island called Wainright. We don't tend to use the expression "period" for the end of a sentence. We use the term "full stop". Aside from the mick-baiting, the storyline is also awful. DNF. In fact DNFF. I need to go and get a q-tip for my ears now. Send your prayers. I am traumatised after this.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Really can't add anything to what other reviewers have said; terrible Mary Sue characterisations. It really is the Waltons....every time my husband heard me play it he'd start humming the theme tune. Only Scott Brick kept me listening. Who would enjoy this? Teens maybe? I have no idea.

Would you ever listen to anything by Brad Manuel again?

No

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

Scott Brick is a talented narrator but he had scant material to work with here, so when I say "none" it's really not his fault.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Last Tribe?

The entire novel.

Any additional comments?

Please avoid this. There are so many wonderful novels in this genre don't waste 20 odd hours on this.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Yes. Adding a plot would have been nice.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Meh. So what?

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?

Eli McCullough - Will Patton is the best. But even he couldn't save this for me.

Could you see The Son being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No....Dullsville, Ohio.

Any additional comments?

I really didn't like this. The author was obviously attempting to write part paean, part elegy for The American Empire - its roots and decline, but it just ended up hitting you over the head with this in a rather unsubtle way. For instance - the Comanche Chief with Gibbons Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire as the stuffing for his shield.
In the end I didn't care. The characters, with the exception of Peter, left me cold. There were no redeeming characteristics with which I could identify......

The male narrators were great, especially Patton, of whom I am a big fan.

I like her as an actress, but Mulgrew's voice really grates on the ears. I get that it suits Jeanne McCullough, but it is hard to listen to.

This took me ages to get through because I really didn't look forward to putting it back on the player....that's not usual for me.

Would you listen to Train Dreams and Jesus' Son again? Why?

Yes - certainly Train Dreams. The story affects you long after you stop listening. The writer has a very delicate touch, never descending to sentimentality or mawkishness.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Granier; a simple man's interaction with the world told with such dignity and pathos. Some scenes, like the fire, or the worlf girl, really affected me.

Have you listened to any of Will Patton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I listen to a lot of Will Patton's work, mainly because I am addicted to his readings of James Lee Burke's novels. He is always brilliant. The cadence and tonality in his voice here is quite different to the JLB material. Granier's story is told with a breathy tenderness that I just loved. On foot of getting addicted to his readings of JLB's work, I have seen a lot of Patton's film work and he has extraordinary range and nuance, which clearly spills over to his readings.

Would you listen to Two for Texas again? Why?

Yes - JLB always stands up to multiple readings. The plot, characters, narrative voice, humour, and depth of emotion in this story make it a very rewarding experience

What was one of the most memorable moments of Two for Texas?

Anytime Hugh is knocking around. Or Deaf. Will Patton's delivery is brilliant, particularly for these two characters.

Which character – as performed by Will Patton – was your favorite?

Hugh or Deaf!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Oftentimes both!

Any additional comments?

Nobody should ever be permitted to read James Lee Burke other than Will Patton. I'm addicted.
