Not sure of the point
Revisado: 07-28-21
Long family saga that doesn’t really go anywhere. Multiple parents who have no interest in their children or their own lives. Children who grow up but seem to not know how to love themselves. Long and winding.

Audible does not match book
Revisado: 08-28-20
I usually have the book and the audible and read/listen together.
This audible actor does not read what is written. Sometimes whole paragraphs are left out, sometimes the words are just incorrect, margarine for butter, for example.
The story - I'm not done yet, but these characters are not interesting. They just keep making bad choices over and over again and never learning, in fact, inviting the same bad ass to interfere with their life again and again. I don't feel any emotion toward these people - just bored.

Historia
Diana Gabaldon's fans will be delighted to find Jamie and Claire as spirited and endearing as ever in this fourth installment of this magnificent saga. Twice Claire has used an ancient stone circle to travel back to the 18th century. The first time she found love with a Scottish warrior but had to return to the 1940s to save their unborn child. The second time she reunited with her lost love but had to leave behind the daughter that he would never see. Now Brianna, from her 1960s vantage point, has found a disturbing obituary and will risk everything in an attempt to change history.

Davina Porter makes the story live
Revisado: 01-27-20
Diana Gabaldon’s epic tale over many books and novellas is a wonderful escape into another part of history with the adept ruse worthy of Samuel Clemens. It is Davina Porter’s narration that is magical. Whether read or listened - these books do not disappoint. I have been lost in them for days and the audible versions help on the long drives and flights.

Wish it had been read by someone else
Revisado: 01-27-20
I’m so interested in this subject and have the hardcover book as well. The author and the director are the problem here. Her voice trails off so much, that even on maximum volume, I can’t understand what she is saying.
The pitch and rhythm are off. The author raises her voice for emphasis but it is shrill. It’s a better read than a listen.

Historia
With ribald humor, wit, and incredible insight, Alan seamlessly moves back and forth in time, integrating stories from his childhood in Scotland and his experiences today as the celebrated actor of film, television, and stage. At times suspenseful, at times deeply moving, but always incredibly brave and honest, Not My Father's Son is a powerful story of embracing the best aspects of the past and triumphantly pushing the darkness aside.

Pleasant story

There is some repetition, but on the whole, I enjoyed Alan Cumming’s reading of this memoir. I particularly liked his openness of his life and his relationship with his mum and sib.

Interesting

There is much to like about the mom in chief. Some of this explains things that happened. The beginning is very good and entertaining. The middle gets to be a bit sanitized, the end is clearly explaining. I enjoyed hearing and reading about the more difficult or quiet parts.

Historia
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Wonderful Intro to Westeros
Revisado: 05-26-14
What made the experience of listening to A Game of Thrones the most enjoyable?
I am reading the book as well as listening to it. The match up of the book to the recording is great as I can go back and forth as needed. Roy Dotrice's voices make the book come alive. Compared to the TV program, it is not the word for word screenplay but the complexity of the book is literally more real.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Game of Thrones?
The dire wolves discovery - since I had seen the discovery on the small screen, the book description was more evocative of the moment. I could feel the pups, hear their sounds and smell their acceptance. The screen seemed to gloss over the scene, so that I remembered Greyjoy more than the pups.
What does Roy Dotrice bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His ability to create the many voices of the book, bring it to life - differently than the actors do in the scenes. Wonderful characters, brought to life.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Winter is coming.

Wish I had read the reviews on the chapter issue
Revisado: 05-25-14
What did you like best about A Clash of Kings? What did you like least?
Great story, wonderful voices from Dotrice.
But the chapter problem was enough to make me reconsider buying another book rom Audible.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Tyrion. Must be hell.
Have you listened to any of Roy Dotrice’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, he's fantastic.
Was A Clash of Kings worth the listening time?
Most of the time, but supremely frustrating. The chapters do not match the book and the chapter breaks don't start at a chapter. They start in the middle. I read the book and listen to it, when I'm driving or working out. So finding my place is sooooo frustrating on the voice side, that I may not purchase another.
