Spellbinding Romantic Fantasy

This story was really engaging, from the beginning to the end. Well-drawn characters, particularly a female royal heiress, Liyen, who is strong and a leader, to her core. She falls in love with the Immortal, God of War, and together, they overcome many obstacles and try to save her mortal kingdom from destruction. I found their story compelling, and not "sappy" in a traditional romantic sense. The growth of their relationship was very believable, but the whole story was steeped in fantasy. The theme reminded me of Greek mythology that I enjoyed as a kid. Nicely done story. I will definitely be picking up other books by this author. Also, the Audiobook narration was extremely well-done.

I enjoyed the general content of the book, it is a metaphysical and spiritual set of essays derivived from the author's life experience, as well as her counseling of others. She's a Unity minister and has good content to share on how to grow in your relationships, overcome obstacles, achieve goals etc. Of particular value is her suggesting ways to bridge differences and to change oneself instead of trying to change others. It had some valuable advice, but would probably be better received in print.

Since the author reads it herself, she doesn't come across in a way that makes it easy to listen to. She has her cell phone notifications going off throught the recording and that "dinging" is distracting. She also doesn't read smoothy at times. The whole delivery is less than I could stand. Had to scuttle the audio early and read it in print.

Loved Reading Elvira's Story

I was famiiar with Elvira when she used to be on TV making wisecracks during horror films in her Movies Macabre. She was vampy and a Morticia Adams type character with spunk! But I was drawn to her autobiography after hearing her interviewed on Youtube by a podcaster. Cassandra Peterson is engaging from page 1 and tells juicy stories about musicians, actors and celebrities. The fact that she narrates the book herself makes it all the better. What an inspiring story of overcoming a lot of family dysfunction, and developing her career as she overcame hardship, poverty, and the ups and downs of a tough career in show business. This is a total pageturner!

Well, I can't say enough how much I adored this book. As an Elvis fan, I always felt sorry for Lisa Marie losing her beloved Dad at such a young age. I kept up, through the news, when she married, had children and when she developed a music career,The Elvis movie with Austin Butler reengaged my admiration of Elvis, and made me sad for Lisa Marie, especially at the thought of her losing her son to suicide. She just seemed to have a tragic life. Yet she was such a beautiful, talented person. I've gained new admiration for her AND her talented daughter, Riley Keogh, and this book just brought it all home into one fascinating story. I loved the way, with the Audible version, we got to hear Riley Keogh and Julia Roberts narrating her life, with snippets of Lisa Marie (from tapes) voicing her own story. The whole thing was woven together in a spellbinding tale that is one of the best autobiographies ever.

This is one of those Lisa Jewell novels that is the perfect blend between plot and characterization. At first, with the book taking place in two timelines and with numerous characters, I was afraid I'd get lost, but no worries on that. The characters are compelling and whenever Henry is the narrator, we are reading about the past, and the other characters are in the present day. Most of the story takes place in the past and is so compelling. The gloomy mansion itself is another character. I suggest reading this one first, and then immediately going to the second book, The Family Remains, which gives an update on the children, who are then adults. The two books together form a story layering that is so deep. I'm still thinking about them. This is a modern gothic thriller that is Lisa Jewell at the top of her game!

I always love China Bayles mysteries. This one, in particular, reminded me of the spiritual retreats I've been to a few times at a nearby monastery. In this mystery, China is taking a break and getting away from her everyday life, and in the process, gets pulled into solving a murder mystery right there at the convent. There were many twists and turns and this was a satisfying read.

This is truly one of those "unput-down-able" thrillers that will absorb the reader from page 1 until the end. If you like the old gothics from the past, this is a modern-day reinvention of the genre in the best way possible. I liked and identified with the flawed but very relatable narrator, Rowan. She had inner spunk as she tries to hide beyond the facade of the "perfect nanny." As the story unfolds, the reader is carried along in the spooky atmosphere of the half Victorian, half glass and techno-haunted house in the Scottish highlands. I absolutely couldn't put it down! There are so many twists and turns. Wow!

I can't say enough good things about this book. I love the 1970's setting, in the Alaskan wilderness. The rugged, beautifully ruthless environment is a character in and of itself. This story draws you in from the beginning and doesn't let go until the last page. I loved the main character, Lenny, and the parents perfectly demonstrated an abusive PTSD alcoholic father and a co-dependent mother who couldn't break away from the abuse. All the characters were colorway and so realistic. I felt that "Large Marge" could walk off the page. So well done. It will be hard finding another book to live up to this great read. Also, the narrator for the audiobook is engaging and does a wonderful job.

Not up to her usual standards

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the China Bayles series, and have relished each in the series. So I was extremely excited to read this latest in the series that we've been awaiting for so long. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the author's usual high standards. The plot was mediocre, the characterization much more shallow, the mystery a big yawn and very predictable. I have also enjoyed the dual time storyline in past novels, such as Queen Anne's Lace, Widow's Tears, and Wormwood. This novel, however, even the historical storyline, seemed more stilted and less compelling. The unraveling of the mystery was slow going and almost tedious. In this title, China leaves Pecan Springs to go to North Carolina to solve a mystery, so she doesn't have her usual cast of characters (McQuaid, Ruby, Sheila, etc) to add interest, and the secondary characters in this novel are very bland, in compasion. So, relucantly, I have decided that I will return to re-reading the series from the beginning in hope that the author either puts more zing into the next book, or puts this series to rest, much as I'd miss it. Better to go out with a bang than a whimper.

From the very beginning to the end, I was drawn into this story of a woman who transforms her blindness into a natural part of who she is and the talents that she brings to the world spring from it, from a place of profound self acceptance that was hard-earned. This was a fascinating story because Molly has made it her life mission to help people understand blindness as it really is, and how to overcome whatever physical or mental or emotional handicap a person faces. She has overcome a lot, , , and there is so much in her story to inspire everyone.
