Every tax paying US citizen needs to read this book. It can be a bit dry, unsurprisingly, but it traces out critical history, explains the impacts on the modern day, and suggests a variety of practical ways to make change now and in the future, at personal and institutional levels.

Having read The Warmth of Other Suns and listened to The Broken Earth trilogy, I was fully expecting to be blown away by this book. And oh wow, was I right!!!! If I had read this several years ago, I would have been radicalized to aspire to antiracism a lot sooner, but of course it wasn't published until last year. I hope that people just waking up to the reality of racism in this country read this book, and can skip some of the fumbling I went through.
The key thesis of refeaming of race as caste makes almost everything with regards to race I've been confused by make sense! This book was filled with a wholly new spin on everything I have learned, and filled in the gaps so throughly that I know I'll still be gaining insights months after finishing the last chapter.
This book deepens my appreciation for the impact of history on the present, makes plain the framing I need to adopt in order to "know what to do" rather than wring my hands in resigned apathy, and is a breath of fresh air in explaining the frightening atmosphere of the current political moment.
