Heartwarming without being sappy. Loved how the characters developed and came to grips with their difficulties and tragedies. Narrator was wonderful and each character's voice was so apt and distinct.

I love this set of audiobooks, combined here. I've never understood why it hasn't become a classic work of American fiction. Bodett captures so much of our human condition with his gentle words and phrases that nevertheless reveal the depths of the disparate characters you'll find here.
Garrison Keillor was very popular when I first listened to this collection, and I couldn't figure out why he was more well-known than Tom Bodett, who has similar gentle humor, but much more depth. Every time I go through it, I see new things, and am always moved. just a beautiful work.

This biography looks at the nearly 50 years of J Edgar Hoover's reign over the FBI. I was surprised to see how he played such a significant role in so many events of those years. From the gangster Era of the 30s, the McCarthy era, the Civil Rights movement, the assassinations of John & Bobby Kennedy & Martin Luther King, the student uprisings and protests of the 60s. Hoover was there. He was a political genius, managing to maintain power and even popularity until the last decade or so. It can't be concluded that he was a good man, but this portrait gives a nuanced view of the man and the times.

While the theme of a child transforming the life of a hardened senior citizen is not unique, this is a wonderfully executed example. There are some twists and turns, but the focus is how these things affect the characters, who are all beautifully drawn. I was touched by this deeply moving book.

I have read a few other books about the roots and effects of racism, but I was still staggered by this one. Dr. Anderson has exposed the rage that continues to motivate the creation of a mind-boggling array of laws aimed at keeping black Americans from gaining ground in our society. Beginning around the Civil War, she shows in stunning detail how every step of progress has been met with utter fury from whites. More often than not, the fury has won. Every American should read this book.

I've been a fan of Philip Yancey since I used to read his articles in Campus Life as a teen. His writings always asked tough questions and refused to offer insipid answers. This book explains how he became that quiet, but unflinching voice of truth in a community that too often demands easy answers & justifies appalling behavior. EVERY evangelical or former evangelical should read this book. Thank you Mr.Yancey!

Jes Baker is so honest with her journey and challenges to be ok with our bodies. First book I've ever read on body positivity, and it has really helped me so much. I'm a senior & can't do most of the things mentioned in her "fat people do all the things, " but I howled at the idea of someone doing them - and that was freeing, too. Jes Baker, you rock!

Think again - or better yet, listen to this amazing book. Her exploits with the Underground Railroad are astonishing enough, but it is only a fraction of the work of this extraordinary woman. Her story is made all the more remarkable by the fact that, throughout her life, she suffered from the effects of a brain injury that would have incapacitated most people. She is truly an American hero and is finally treated like one here.

Riveting! The twists and turns just keep up throughout the book. In spite of the length, it doesn't feel like there's a wasted word. French sculpts the plot and the characters with both precision and lightness of touch, without flinching from the brutal nature of much of it. And Hilda Fay's narration is perfect. I'm not familiar enough with Irish accents to testify to their accuracy, but she has made each character so distinct that you know exactly who's speaking. And, I do love hearing the various accents. Enjoy!!
