Historia
One by one, she undid each event, each decision, each choice. If Davy had remembered to put on a coat. If Seamie McGeown had not found himself alone on a dark street. If Michael Agnew had not walked through the door of the pub on a quiet night in February in his white shirt. There is nothing special about the day Cushla meets Michael, a married man from Belfast, in the pub owned by her family. But here, love is never far from violence, and this encounter will change both of their lives forever.

I listened to it twice. Highly entertaining and educational.
Revisado: 06-13-23
This is an interesting story set in the time of The Troubles in Belfast in the 1970s. The author cleverly uses a love story and a primary school as a backdrop to paint the difficult issues faced by Catholics and Protestants at the time. I loved the characters and the narrator brought the story to life. Some of the themes covered are complex and I decided to listen to the story again so that I could pick up the nuances. This is an excellent book, and I have already recommended it to others.

Great story, annoying narration
Revisado: 10-06-22
This is a good story. I think the more we read mystery novels, the characters become predictable and one starts to keep notes of who the possible villain could be. I was pleasantly surprised to be wrong. Well done to the author. I did not enjoy the audible experience however. I think it could have been better if fewer narrators were used.

Sage Winters always knew her sister was a little different even though they were identical twins. They loved the same things and shared a deep understanding, but Rosemary—awake to every emotion, easily moved to joy or tears—seemed to need more protection from the world. Six years after Rosemary's death from pneumonia, Sage, now sixteen, still misses her deeply. Their mother perished in a car crash, and Sage's stepfather, Alan, resents being burdened by a responsibility he never wanted.

It’s an interesting and riveting read and gives insight into what happens when state institutions are under resourced.

With war looming dangerously close, Ilse’s school days soon turn to lessons of survival. In the harshness of winter, her family must join the largest exodus in human history to survive. As battle lines are drawn and East Prussia’s borders vanish beneath them, they leave their farm and all they know behind for an uncertain future. The value of novelists in helping us understand history
Revisado: 08-04-22
What an amazing book! It’s gives one layers and layers of understanding experiences of people during the World War II.
You see it from the perspective of parents, children, soldiers, survivors, those who support the war effort, those who are anti the war.
It’s a really valuable experience to read this especially now when we see the events taking place in Ukraine.
I loved every moment.

Historia
Benedict Cumberbatch reads the enduring classic of Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis. Gregor Samsa wakes to discover that he has turned into a large, monstrous insect-like creature. He attempts to adjust to his new condition as he deals with being burdensome to his parents and sister, who are repelled by the horrible creature he has become. First published in 1915, Kafka's darkly comic novella explores concepts such as the absurdity of life, alienation and the disconnect between mind and body.

A treat to listen to Benedict Cumberbatch
Revisado: 05-21-22
I loved this reading of Metamorphosis. Benedict Cumberbatch brought so much to the experience with his flawless and expressive reading. He brought the characters to life. The story is such a sad one which exposes themes of alienation, and questions the purpose of life. Highly recommended

Light Crime Storyline with Endearing characters
Revisado: 01-02-22
What an awesome book! I took a chance as this is not an author I have read before and have not regretted the purchase. I could not stop listening to this and am now bereft that it’s over.😀
The characters are endearing and and the narrator brought them to life. Excellent and absorbing storyline. I will certainly be looking out for other novels by this author. This is highly recommended and I will be buying hard copies of this to hand out to friends.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

What a beautiful story of the Human Spirit!
Revisado: 09-19-21
I really struggled to get this book, but am so grateful that I persevere. Initially the stories appeared unrelated and I had to often go back to listen to a previous chapter. But once I got into it, I thoroughly enjoyed it. And when the seemingly unrelated incidents, start to merge and make sense, I found myself smiling in amazement. Well done to the author! A beautiful story about the human spirit and about the value of community and how neighbourhoods and neighbours support each other. I loved this book.
