Needs a plot
Revisado: 06-02-22
I have read a number of Marks books. He’s a good writer. This one could have used an actual plot. As it is it’s more of and extended epilogue without an actual novel. A bunch of great, well developed characters to which nothing actually happens

Complex, engaging, and moving
Revisado: 03-16-22
The character of Morgan Wilberforce is rich and complex. One is moved and amused by turns. Cross manages to write about the place where
Childhood and adulthood boyhood and
Manhood meet without sentimentality or condescension. The reader comes to love the imperfect, confused, and wounded boy and to admire the man that he is clearly going to
Become. The character of the Bishop brings matters of faith and the Spirit into the story without it being either preachy or scornful. This
Book was so Much more than I anticipated I recommend it.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Hard Sci-fi with a heart
Revisado: 06-16-21
I’m usually not a big fan of hard sci-fi but this book is the exception. Weir is a wonderful writer and in Hail Mary he draws us not only into the scientific problem solving but into the inner struggles and inner beauty of his characters.

The story, the writing, and the narration on this novel are all top notch. It’s powerful and compelling. The characters are multidimensional and you will find yourself wanting to hug them and yell at them in terms.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

This book is life changing
Revisado: 01-26-21
Ms Wilkerson’s book employs a powerfully different paradigm to explore the history of race and racial
Injustice in America. Being a student of American History myself I was not surprised by any new facts in this book, but viewing those facts using the
Paradigm of caste rather than “race” or “racism” was life changing. The whole time I was listen to this book I could “hear” facts that I knew but never fully understood, “kerchunking” into place in a giant puzzle. The idea of an American caste system is not new (as Ms Wilkerson is quick to point out) but she does an amazing job of lifting it up and using it as a profoundly accurate lens through which to view ourselves.

Hugh Ryan's When Brooklyn Was Queer is a groundbreaking exploration of the LGBT history of Brooklyn, from the early days of Walt Whitman in the 1850s up through the queer women who worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during World War II, and beyond. In intimate, evocative, moving prose, Ryan brings this never-before-told story of Brooklyn's vibrant and forgotten queer history to life.

Fascinating book
Revisado: 06-10-19
If you are looking for a really good read for Pride Month may I suggest “When Brooklyn Was Queer” by Hugh Ryan. It is not JUST a queer history of Brooklyn but a comprehensive exploration of Queerness in America between the publication of “Leaves of Grass” in 1855 and Stonewall in 1969. It explores the changes in queer self understanding as well as the changes in societal understanding of Queerness over time. Also the intersectionality and NON intersectionality between race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and class, and ALSO the roll that wartime disruption played in the emergence and repression of queer culture and identity. It’s been a long time since I’ve read a history book as enlightening and intriguing as this!

Once described by The Washington Post as "the most interesting mayor you've never heard of", Pete Buttigieg, the 36-year-old Democratic mayor of South Bend, Indiana, has improbably emerged as one of the nation's most visionary politicians. First elected in 2011, Buttigieg left a successful business career to move back to his hometown, previously tagged by Newsweek as a "dying city", and transformed it into a shining model of urban reinvention.

Middle school hasn't been going well for Colin. His teenage sister teases him mercilessly, his autistic brother lashes out at him, and he has a crush on his best friend, Andy. But after the tragic night when his father commits suicide, none of that matters. Diane, Colin's mother, seeks solace in therapy. Colin is awash in guilt, and casts about for someone to confide in: first his estranged grandfather, then a predatory science teacher. WTF Mr Patrick???
Revisado: 03-25-18
1) spoiler alert
2) this novel is well written with engaging
Believable characters for whom you will mourn and even weep and about whom you will care deeply.
3) but it sucks! It goes from awesome to absurdly and outrageously awful in the in the last 10 minutes of the book.
It might have ended as a tragedy where these beloved but flawed characters continue to spiral out of control. But it didn’t. It might have ended hopefully with the characters transcending their pain and brokenness and beginning the climb to wholeness. But it didn’t. It might have ended ambiguously with the characters continuing the long and torturous road down which they have begun and leaving the reader struggling with how to love these deeply flawed people knowing that their future is unknowable. But it didn’t. Instead it ended “...and suddenly everyone was run over by a speeding bus. The end.” I am so angry with this talented writer that I want to scream!!!

Historia
People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semifinals, and they actually have a shot at winning.
