It was the final test. A chance to win not only the love of Allah, but the love of her father - something she had never been able to earn. Esther took a deep breath and raised her hand in the air. At the age of 18, she had just volunteered to become a suicide bomber. Defying Jihad is the true story of a girl growing up under radical Islamic rule, trained to believe her ultimate purpose was to serve Allah by dying as a jihadist. But two nights before she was to leave forever, she had a dream...one that would change the course of her destiny.

Excellent story with references
Revisado: 02-28-23
For the most part this is a well-written story of a Muslim woman turned Christian. But because she’s a highly educated woman, there are a lot of direct comparisons between the Quran and Bible which I look forward to exploring further. Many short debates were described that I found helpful. This will be an enjoyable listen several times through.

Story is phenomenal, Narration needs work.
Revisado: 09-05-22
I’ve loved these books since high school and instead of them becoming obsolete- I enjoy them even more as an adult. It’s like visiting old friends!
But the narrator… Jeeze. Some mispronounced names is to be expected but the errors are all ones the make no sense whatsoever like T-ah-z (for Tas, short for Tasslehoff) and Paladin instead of Paladine. Inflections are completely wrong… whispers are shouts and growls are whines and it’s just confusing.
The narrator from chronicles was 100x better. Wish they’d redo these…

In Geisha, a Life, Mineko Iwasaki tells her story, from her warm early childhood, to her intense yet privileged upbringing in the Iwasaki okiya (household), to her years as a renowned geisha, and finally, to her decision at the age of 29 to retire and marry, a move that would mirror the demise of geisha culture. Mineko brings to life the beauty and wonder of Gion Kobu, a place that "existed in a world apart, a special realm whose mission and identity depended on preserving the time-honored traditions of the past."

Good Bio but Memoirs is much more entertaining…
Revisado: 07-06-21
So if this is the true story from “Memoirs of a Geisha”, it gets points for being an authentic first hand account. But… the character development is seriously lacking. She has no personality. She has ambition but no driving passions, creativity, charm etc. and the whole story kind of just drones on without much anticipation.
I will say that “Memoirs of a Geisha” is my all time favorite audiobook and I’m always stunned by the imagery and depth of character. This is “possibly” the fault of the narrator as well but ultimately what you’re getting here is an autobiography and not a good “story.” Still interesting and worth the listen. But I didn’t find it remotely similar to Memoirs when it came to history, storyline, characters etc. This is an entirely different book and story. If anything, it makes you wonder what the lawsuit was really about and if perhaps the other book was more accurate (eek)… and this was an attempt to correct relationships that were marred by the first telling. No way to know! But the former was a better read hands down.

Just ok... not very relatable
Revisado: 01-21-21
I absolutely loved the hunger games trilogy but this book was seriously lacking... Collins is a great writer but she falls flat in the romance department. This was supposed to be a love story but it was utterly passionless and boring. None of the characters were very relatable. I will say that if you love the hunger games it’s worthwhile to hear once but there’s no replay value. The narrator is ok but he’s distinctly male and this book is full of songs sung by a female. He doesn’t even try to sing. Instead, he reads the lyrics as awkward chants. If a half-decent singer helped with narration, maybe the story would have been more engaging.

Just “ok”... pretty slow, nothing special
Revisado: 10-09-20
I really like Ann Tatlock’s writing. And one of the things I like most about her is relatable characters and circumstances. But I think the family details in this one were so convoluted and the story so complicated that i wasn’t able to connect with any characters. The narration is pretty drab but I don’t think it’s the fault of the narrator. I think the story is pretty drab. I will be exchanging this one.

Heart-wrenching, hard subject but good writing
Revisado: 10-17-19
I love how Hannah can write people and especially women in such a deep way. It’s obvious she has a lot of insight personally and also does her research to keep The subject matter as accurate as possible.
I’m a new mom so this book was very difficult for me to listen to. I’m a big fan of the nightingale which had some rough moments but they were more balanced with humor, joy, and heroism. In Winter Garden, the sadness dragged out unpleasantly and I did not enjoy the long-suffering explanations of dying family and crushing loss. This was my second listen because I tuned out so much the first time (before I was a mom) and now... I don’t think I can hear it again.
Steel yourself! It’s a slow and harsh but enchanting read.

Historia
In February 2013 I gave a speech at the National Prayer Breakfast. Standing a few feet from President Obama, I warned my fellow citizens of the dangers facing our country and called for a return to the principles that made America great. Many Americans heard and responded, but our nation’s decline has continued. Today the danger is greater than ever before, and I have never shared a more urgent message than I do now.

Ben Carson has renewed my faith in America!
Revisado: 08-15-15
I've never been excited about a candidate before. I've always voted for the "least" evil but Ben Carson brings me hope.
The audio book reads just as if Ben himself was talking to you. The intonation is clear and his points are easily followed.
Whether or not you agree with everything said in this book, it should at least make clear to any of us that America is still a wonderful country and "we the people" have the ultimate power to shape our future.
I encourage anyone to read this and even read his story first: "Gifted hands" which offers much background and a more personable journey.
I hope you all love this as much as I did!

Thrilling and Captivating!
Revisado: 07-22-11
I heard this before the movie was made and it drew me completely in. The jazz music in the entrance of the story is OVERLY-loud and overbearing. Luckily, it only drowns out the first paragraph or so of Stephen's narration, so just wait it out. The rest of the reading was excellent as were the sound effects and music. I actually "jumped" toward the end of the story and was completely taken in. I was so captivated that when I went to see the movie, the images in my imagination were already so vivid so I actually panicked and had to hide my eyes through some of the movie. I'm laughing about it now but I was scared then! It was awesome :) I hope you love it as much as I did!

Entertaining but not Stephen King's genre
Revisado: 07-22-11
I think the book was good and fun to listen to. The voice of "Flagg" another recurring evil character in King's writing was tolerable until he began screaming up the corridors in the end of the book. I literally wanted to shut off the recording. My only criticism is that it wasn't very deep and not all that imaginative for a fantasy novel. It's still written as if it were from this world and these times and its just hard for me to make that leap. I prefer fantasy novels that take me to another world and immerse me in it. This was more like reading about King Arthur and the knights of the round table. If that's what you like, you'll love it. It was a good book with good characters. Just not my preference from this particular writer. Note: I wasn't a fan of his Dark Tower Series either.

On a warm October day, Jessie Burlingame lies in the bedroom of her secluded lake home, listening to the far-off sounds of the country; the cry of a loon, the growl of a chain saw, the bark of a lonesome dog. Nearer, she hears the banging of the screen door, left unlatched in the autumn breeze; nearer still, the click of the key locking the second pair of handcuffs that chain her to the bed.

Unemotional and Disconnected
Revisado: 07-22-11
I read the reviews and was dubious about this title but I had had a previous friend rave about the book so I tried it anyway. I was disappointed.
People that read a lot of Stephen King start to notice recurring characters and how many of his stories interconnect with others. This book filled in the spaces from the eclipse in "Dolores Claiborne." The other book was "far" better written than this I'm afraid.
You really feel no compassion whatsoever for the main character despite the plight of her situation and the abuse of her past.
I feel like the concluding story was disconnected from the beginning and the middle really didn't fit either... this book must have been written during an imaginative dry spot for Stephen King. Read "Lisey's story" or "Dolores Claiborne" instead for similar but much more captivating characters and subject matter. This was just a waste of time and money.
