This ranks as one of the best audiobook I’ve listened this year. The story is well written, gritty and realistic. Having multiple actors somehow works (it usually doesn’t). And the conclusion is satisfying.

Finished it in a single day.

Make no mistake, this book borrows heavily from Robert Greene. However, while Greene glorifies manipulation, politics and lack of morality in general, this books presents these in a better, lighter way.

In other words it is how to wage warfare in life if you are the underdog when the odds are against in your favor. The last part of the book inclines heavily towards behavioral economics. Some parts are interesting, some not so much. Some simply explain how counter-intuitive systems works but do not provide a real alternative to the problem. You are left with picking the least evil, as there is no real good.

If you've read "48 Laws of Power" or "The Prince", this book will not teach you new things, apart from a history lesson in segregation and the 13 year Irish war.

Let's get something straight - TaGR is not a magic book. I've seen so many reviews with "don't alter the original, don't change it, don't add new content" that I was afraid of buying any other version. I have already read the book in paperback so this came as the next natural choice.

TaGR (this version) is good but it's not perfect. The naration sometimes it's not very exciting and it can get lost in the background. The story focuses on the TaGR methodology which is fine but it's sometimes alienating to hear examples from 75 years ago. The lenght is way too big especially since the principles are not so many.

So I enjoyed this purchase. However, I enjoy a lot more my copy of the 21st century edition. It's far better edited, the sound quality seems better (it's totally subjective) and it's far more relatable than to the classic.

Therefore, if you want TaGR on steroids, look for the latest version. It's far longer but it's worth it.

8:30 Hours On Validated Learning & System Thinking

This is not a bad book by any standart. It presents a very good framework for building a start-up (especially useful for tech start-ups) and it delivers exactly what it promises - the lean methodology to build a business.

This methodology is based on adding a new critical metric to your business, validated learning or seeing what works and what doesn't. It's the opposite of "build it and they'll come". Instead it's "build the minimum product, see if they come and then improve it based on what gets results".

Most entrepreneurs employ wishful thinking - hoping or feeling like the market has a moral obligation to buy what they've built just because they've bought it. In the lean start-up methodology you don't take any chances and you use only real world data to see if your idea will float or sink.

The only downsize to this book is that after 8 hours, I've got about 3 good ideas from it. Yes, three good ideas that I've applied both in my personal and professional life but nothing more nonetheless. This means at least for me that the book could have been shorter, maybe 50% of it's current lenght. There are a lot of examples and after a time you are in a position of "yes, I've got it, move on".

As far as my experience with Audible, again, it was an amazing one. Chapters are a little strange in this audiobook (I'm listening it on a SanDisk Sanza) but overall, it's an amazing book for results oriented people. The methodology here can be used both in a business and in your personal life, so don't shy away from this book even if it's designed for entrepreneurs.

And as far as the lenght, do as I do, sometimes play it on fast speed. The narator speaks rather slowly and clearly so I can understand it even on high speed.

Unexpected & Amazing Insights From A Master

This was my first purchase off Audible.com. I never heard of Ray H. Williams before. However, as a required resource to achieve one of my goals, I have decided to give it a try and buy “The Wizard of Ads”.

What a good decision this proved to be. While it’s style is very different from mainstream copywriting teachers like John Carlton and Dan Kennedy, I have learned in four hours more usable insights about copywriting, sales & marketing than I can usually learn in a 3 day seminar.

The second part of the book was almost entirely about designing the right life philosophy. I wasn’t really expecting for this, but the insight brought by Ray confirmed many of my beliefs and made me reconsider a few key notions I had about life.

The final lesson, the “Letter to Garcia” was brilliant. The essence of this small essay is that the key of success is focusing on one thing and doing it, without further excuses. The reason why most people lack success is because of the countless reasons & excuses they find just not to do a single task if it’s not to their liking.

Now I’ve bought Secret Formulas of the Wizard of Ads and I’m looking forward to see what further wisdom Ray can teach me. I highly recommend “The Wizard of Ads” to anyone looking for a crash course in advertising & sales mentality and how to succeed in a changing world.

Be the kind of men who can “deliver the letter to Garcia” and nothing in this world can stop you from achieving your dreams.
