Historia
When life throws her one setback too many, midwife and young widow Tess Hartsong takes off for Runaway Mountain. In this small town high in the Tennessee mountains, surrounded by nature, she hopes to outrun her heartbreak and find the solace she needs to heal. But instead of peace and quiet, she encounters an enigmatic artist with a craving for solitude, a fairy-tale sprite with too many secrets, a helpless infant, a passel of curious teens, and a town suspicious of outsiders, especially one as headstrong as Tess.

Disappointing!!!
Revisado: 11-18-20
I have read lots of SEP's novels. This is by far my least favorite. I just can't get past the main character and her totally stupid over-attachment to the infant. She talks about other women needing counseling, she needs it. It is just ridiculous. Very disappointed. Wish I had used my credit elsewhere.

Historia
Polygamous wives were participants in a controversial and very public religious practice that violated most 19th-century social and religious rules of a monogamous America. Harline considers the questions: Were these women content with their sacrifice? Did the benefits of polygamous marriage for the Mormons outweigh the human toll it required and the embarrassment it continues to bring?

Very hard to follow
Revisado: 01-26-18
This could be very interesting, but trying to follow all the different stories was difficult. I wish there would have been more of the original diaries vs. authors interpretation of them. Narration was done by the author and was not great.

Historia
What was it in Sandra Day O'Connor's background and early life that helped make her the woman she is today - the first female justice of the US Supreme Court, and one of the most powerful women in America? In this beautiful, illuminating, and unusual book, Sandra Day O'Connor, with her brother, Alan, tells the story of the Day family and of growing up on the harsh yet beautiful land of the Lazy B Ranch in Arizona. Laced throughout these stories about three generations of the Day family, and everyday life on the Lazy B, are the lessons Sandra and Alan learned about the world.

Listened to it twice
Revisado: 04-14-08
I first listened to this a couple of years ago. Last month I was caught overseas with no new books to listen to, so I listened to this again and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I had the opportunity to visit the area of the Lazy B a while back, and it was really nice to fit the story into the places I had been.

Historia
Why not? After all, no one had ever done it before. It would be one of the longest of all overland journeys, from the English Channel to Singapore. Several expeditions had already tried. Some had got as far as the deserts of Persia; a few had even reached the plains of India. But no one had managed to go on from there, over the jungle-clad mountains of Assam and across northern Burma to Thailand and Malaya.

Historia
San Francisco Earthquake that leveled a city symbolic of America's relentless western expansion. Simon Winchester has also fashioned an enthralling and informative informative look at the tumultuous subterranean world that produces earthquakes, the planet's most sudden and destructive force. In the early morning hours of April 18, 1906, San Francisco and a string of towns to its north-northwest and the south-southeast were overcome by an enormous shaking that was compounded by the violent shocks of an earthquake, registering 8.25 on the Richter scale.

Good Material, Disorganized Story
Revisado: 01-24-06
Lots of good, interesting material, but Winchester's presentation of it is disorganized. Some of the material is irrelevant. There is a "horrible" Wal-Mart in the Yukon Territory. What does that have to do with anything else in the book?
