Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Historia
This near-future trilogy is the first chance for English-speaking listeners to experience this multiple-award-winning phenomenon from Cixin Liu, China's most beloved science fiction author. In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion - in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy.

The narrator sounds like a robot
Revisado: 11-16-22
this book was even worse than the first book, I have no interest in reading the third book in the series. this was particularly painful because they switched narrators and the new narrator was mispronouncing names and had no idea how to give speech the correct emotional inflection, he sounded like a robot, he emphasized the wrong words it was terrible

Great book ruined by Ax Norman's terrible reading
Revisado: 09-17-21
I was listening to an old audio version of this book read by John Polk. I believe the recording with originally done for audio cassette and the copy I had was experiencing a lot of audio issues including skipping and some missing pieces including the ending, but in general John Polk did a good job narrating. I figured I would get the audible version so that I would have cleaner audio and no missing sections. To my extreme disappointment I found that there was a different narrator for the audible version of this audiobook and he was absolutely terrible. I'm not sure what is worse, The fact that not only does he mispronounce most of the character names but that he miss pronounces him inconsistently, or the fact that he has absolutely no emotional range or inflection in any of the voices even when the writing explicitly says that a character is speaking with a certain emotion. Ax Norman not only makes it clear that this job is nothing more than a paycheck for him, but that it probably isn't a very large paycheck because he simply does not care and that comes through in his performance. I went back to my John Polk version for the third book in this series because even with all of the audio quality issues it's still a better listen than this guy. I don't know what legal issues prevented them from simply using the John Polk version of the audio that already existed, but what Ax Norman did to this book is a travesty.

In The End Is Always Near, Dan Carlin looks at questions and historical events that force us to consider what sounds like fantasy; that we might suffer the same fate that all previous eras did. Will our world ever become a ruin for future archaeologists to dig up and explore? The questions themselves are both philosophical and like something out of The Twilight Zone.

Seemed like a less focused podcast episode
Revisado: 11-08-19
I love Dan Carlin and I am a religious listener to his podcast and spin-off podcast. I was excited to buy this audiobook because I figured it would be like a super even more amazing version of the podcast but honestly it kind of seems like a step down from some of his better podcast episodes. it seemed somehow less focused than his podcast episodes and went off on a lot of tangents that didn't really have much to do with the main theme of the book. Even left out some of the more interesting stories that I think would have been thematically appropriate, like the Russian officer who refused to make an retaliatory strike when their sensors malfunction erroneously told them that the Americans had launched their first strike. in the end I'm not unhappy with my purchase, Dan Carlin has more than earned my money and I will probably continue to buy anything he puts out in future. this wasn't a bad book by any means, it's just that he puts out a ton of very high-quality free content that this book is competing with.

The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years: From the Next Generation to J. J. Abrams is an incisive, no-holds-barred oral history telling the story of post-Original Series Star Trek, told exclusively by the people who were there, in their own words - sharing the inside scoops they've never told before, unveiling the oftentimes shocking true story of the history of Star Trek, and chronicling the trials, tribulations, and tribbles that have remained deeply buried secrets until now.

Great material, terrible audiobook
Revisado: 06-23-19
The information in this book is worth it for any Trekkie, however I think you'd be much better off with the print version. This book is simply not written in a way that works in the audiobook format. 99% of it is told in the form of presenting someone's name and then a quote that is more or less relevant to the content. Unfortunately a lot of the time after the quote is over you may want to recontextualize it by checking the name again or even looking up who that person was, easy in print, pain in the ass in audio format. There is almost no narration outside the string of quotes.
The quotes are voiced by several different readers and some of them were absolutely dreadful and clearly had no familiarity with Trek, no motivation to check the pronunciation of unfamiliar words, and whoever edited the audio didn't care to correct them. Some of the mispronounced words that jumped out at me:
Qo'noS - que-no-es instead of KRO-nos
Kazon - Kah-zon instead of Kay-zon
Marquis - Mark-ee instead of Mah-key
T'Pol - Tee-Pol instead of Tuh'Pol
Locutis - low-cut-us instead of lo-ku-tus
Ensign - in-sign instead of en-sin
That last one isn't even a made up Trek word, it's just a normal English one. The funny thing is a lot of the book focuses on the bad tendancy to have people involved with Trek who didn't know our care about Trek, but it made the same mistake with the voice cast for this book.
Again, lots of great information here, the author did a fantastic job, it's just the audio version that is lacking.

Historia
Make sure the kids aren’t around! Just because you’re a grown-up doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the art of the children’s bedtime story. Nick Offerman presents this collection of 12 short stories written in the style of a classic kids' tale, but with a decidedly dark and adult approach. What really happened after Snow White died, from the perspective of the one medically trained dwarf? A naive wizard professor reports back from the trenches of an underprivileged school of magic. And much more!

Revisado: 05-14-19
These weren't really funny, they were just kind of weird and off-putting. The narration was fine, and the in between bits by Offerman were good, but I think I disliked every single story.

Late Victorian London. When James Miller, the most respectable of Scottish businessmen, is pulled, dead, from the Thames, his daughter is drawn into an investigation which reveals a whole world of secrets and corruption. Alongside local detective Culley, Catriona’s search for her father’s killer leads all the way to the tragic truth behind the ghostly legend of The Darkwater Bride and the power of her deadly kiss. The Darkwater Bride combines the genres of the Victorian mystery thriller with the equally classic Victorian mode of the ghostly tale.

Historia
Set in present-day Los Angeles, Junk explores an epic conspiracy, one at work for thousands of years that involves total takeover of the planet Earth by aliens. In the wild, souped-up vision of Les Bohem - the acclaimed, Emmy-winning writer of the Steven Spielberg miniseries, Taken - the world is at the end stage of long-range plot that involves a gigantic genetic-engineering project. The aliens who have invaded us have no planet. No spaceship is coming. Instead, a small advance force comes, breeds, and dies - thus becoming an anomaly in our DNA that can’t be explained.

really good story, terrible choice for reader
Revisado: 03-24-19
the Sci-Fi premise was very good and kept me interested the entire time. there was some supernatural elements that I didn't think work that well and the story would have been just as good if not better without them but that's not a huge Mark against it. the biggest problem I had was that the voices all sounded exactly the same, it was hard to tell who was talking, and the reading felt really inappropriate most of the time. I kept on thinking to myself why do all the characters soundboard and kind of gay? until I realized it was John Waters who is doing the reading. now don't get me wrong John Waters is a fine comedian but his sort of sarcastic sense of humor and tone really didn't fit the story. I honestly can't imagine a worse narrator for the story, except for maybe Gilbert Gottfried
