Historia
Over the course of two weeks, everything in Beartown will change. Two years have passed since the events that no one wants to think about. Everyone has tried to move on, but there’s something about this place that prevents it. The destruction caused by a ferocious late-summer storm reignites the old rivalry between Beartown and the neighboring town of Hed, a rivalry which has always been fought through their ice hockey teams. Maya Andersson and Benji Ovich, two young people who left in search of a better life, come home and joyfully reunite with their closest childhood friends.

Read the 1-Stars
Revisado: 05-13-23
I don’t remember what prompted me to download this audiobook since I had never heard of it or the author previously, but I was looking for a good beach book and for whatever reason, I settled on this. I’m from Minnesota, with kids involved with hockey, so I know hockey, though not like the characters in this book. I couldn’t figure out where the book takes place. It was a ridiculous representation of small-town hockey culture and rivalry, and nobody does that like the Iron Range of northern Minnesota. But Sweden? Seriously? Like this? Sorry, but so many people can’t be so awful to each other. They were like caricatures of themselves.
But Sweden does explain the prose. Maybe it was the translation, but it read like a graphic novel. The dialog was like dialog balloons of a comic book and the descriptions of actions like the text at the top or bottom of the cartoon.
And the narrator! Maybe she had a tough task given what she was reading but her voices we all off. The voice of a concerned mom sounded like someone trying to sound like a concerned mom, a skeptical or ironic comment sounded like someone spoofing a skeptical or ironic voice. It almost made me wince.
I kept wondering what I was missing, so after 45 chapters of the prose and narration getting too distracting to even follow the plot, I quit.

Historia
The author of the award-winning Matisse: A Life gives us the definitive biography of writer Anthony Powell - and takes us deep into the heart of 20th-century London's literary life. Insightful, lively, and enthralling, this biography is as much a brilliant tapestry of a seminal era in London’s literary life as it is a revelation of an iconic literary figure. Best known for his 12-volume comic masterpiece, A Dance to the Music of Time, the prolific writer and critic Anthony Powell kept company between the two world wars with rowdy, hard-up writers and painters.

Dreadful Narration
Revisado: 11-21-18
I'm returning this audio book after two chapters because I just can't handle the narration. Non-standard intonations, unsuccessful efforts at adding "life" to the reading, gaps for breath in the strangest places. It was all too confusing and distracting. The book deserves better so I will read it.

Historia
For the past twenty-five years, Margaret Atwood has written works of striking originality and imagination. In The Blind Assassin, she stretches the limits of her accomplishments as never before, creating a novel that is entertaining and profoundly serious. The novel opens with these simple, resonant words: "Ten days after the war ended, my sister drove a car off the bridge." They are spoken by Iris, whose terse account of her sister Laura's death in 1945 is followed by an inquest report proclaiming the death accidental.

Distracting Audio Quality
Revisado: 10-10-18
While there are many reviewers who have glowing things to say about the actual book The Blind Assassin, all well-deserved, I don't believe they are being honest regarding the quality of the "performance", if that encompasses the audio quality. There is no way the performance is 5 stars. The recording is dreadful, as if it was a recording of a microphone picking up the sound of a cassette recorder playing tapes of the narration. You can actually hear the cassette wheels spinning and squeaking. And the constant white noise hiss! Great book. Really, really crummy recording.
