Historia
Gabriel Delling might call himself a professional con artist, but when walking superstitions start trying to bite his face off, his charm is shockingly unhelpful. It turns out living nightmares almost never appreciate a good joke. Together with a succubus who insists on constantly saving his life, Gabe desperately tries to survive a new reality that suddenly features demons, legends, and a giant locust named Dale - all of whom pretty much hate his guts. And when an ancient horror comes hunting for a spirit locked in his head, Gabe finds himself faced with the excruciating choice between death...or becoming some kind of freaking hero.

Worth picking up
Revisado: 04-23-19
I received a credit from the author, and this is usually when I would say in exchange for a review but he didnt ask for a review since he was excited to get his book out there so I am leaving a review anyways.
To me reading is a personal experience. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes and while I dislike parts of this book overall the story itself is real solid and narration is pretty good.
The story is slightly chaotic, which I tend not to like, but as one of line in the book points out: "Your worst choice on one day might be better than your best choice on another day." The chaotic nature of the story and the decisions made, might not be to my personal preference but they really work with this story / author.
Similar issue with the narration for me since, at times, I felt it was overly dramatic but it also shows the parts the author wanted to emphasize. I did end up leaving 4 stars for the performance but not because it was bad, since you can easily distinguish the different character and was mostly well done, but because parts of the performance took me away from the story while I was thinking about the tone and the emotions.
Overall its an interesting story and done well enough that I am going to pick up the second book in the series to see where it leads.

Historia
For as long as she can remember, Seg has lived in the orphanage. She was brought there by her spiteful mentor, Plumbess Roc, to learn the art and danger of plumbing - to become a plumbess. But when Seg struggles, when she finds nightmares in plumbing’s dark recesses, she always turns to another plumbess - the warm, caring Plumbess Zag - for solace. Until Zag dies.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is probably not a book I would have picked up by casually browsing the releases and that would be a mistake on my part.
While this book is not without flaws: short for 1 credit, short names can make keeping track of characters a bit difficult, bits of unexplained travel / movement making for chaotic or unbelievable plot resolution, non-existent chapter transition in the beginning, it is still a very interesting story that is worth reading.
If you are surprised that I would mention so many negatives and give a review an almost a perfect score it is because of what the story accomplishes: Building a truly unique magic system, engaging characters, real struggle/loss, incredible suspense building. Most of the positives will be lost on people who are already not a little tired of the story on rails, so that might be a consideration before picking this book.
On the final note the decision to give this book an Overall score of 5 instead of 4 stars came down to the narration. The delivery, distinct character voices, pacing, basically everything. I am currently looking at the other books narrated by Alison Campbell to listen to.
I hope to run across more works by both the author and the narrator.

Any additional comments?
I tend to judge my books by how many times I delayed going to bed in order to finish up a chapter and for this title it was quite a few times.
If I had to compare this book to other titles I would say it is written in similar styles as Dan Browns "Angels and Demons" or Daniel Suarez "Daemon" series because even though it is a work of fiction everything sounds possible which, to me, makes the story even more immersive.
The narration was amazing and made the book come to life with each character having a unique voice.
The only real negative I heard was the intro with the narrator taking, what I felt where, unnatural pauses while speaking but that part was over quickly and once the real story started I was hooked.
Would I recommend this to my friends: yes
Would I buy the next book in this series: yes

Historia
Remaining in the hero life had been a difficult decision for Travis Colfax. He's managed, so far, to juggle the demands of his team with the usual daily stress. His inner demons, however, are becoming more vocal. Struggling to catch the remaining Morlocks in New Port Arthur is difficult enough, but the ill wind blowing in threatens to grow into a maelstrom of problems. Then there is the one last question: what is Firegod?

Worth reading but not much story advancement

Would you listen to Shadowdemon again? Why?
In the end yes I would listen to Shadowdemon again. Despite a lot of the information being repeated from the first book: description of the same bureaucracy and the trouble it causes, some of the same villains with few new ones, same development and growth issues (although this one does have new elements added) I still thing this was a good worth listening to again. Its different and interesting I just wish it was
Who was your favorite character and why?
Shadowdemon since he is the main character.

Historia
Travis Colfax was born into the hero life. His parents were pillars of the community, and he became a sidekick at the age of nine. He is the only member of the family not to manifest a power. Seven years in he's starting to have his doubts about continuing a career in heroics. Plagued by his own failures, he's giving serious thought simply to hanging up the mask for good and moving on.

A slightly different take on superheros
Revisado: 12-04-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would definitely recommend this good to friends as its interesting. I hate book where I can guess what is going to happen at the two or three chapters ahead so it nice to find something that keeps me guessing.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Shadowboy?
Dealing with bureaucracy. Don't want to spoil much but the first chapter was great where it shows some of the downsides of being a superhero
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Not really. It was an interesting book, but I would not like it if it was overly provocative.

The Seelie and Unseelie Courts are at war. On one side: An obsessive-compulsive knight, a talking tree, and a really cute goblin girl named Golly. On the other: A "Dragon King", phooka assassins, and a mob of angry, bridge-blocking, trolls. Caught in the middle: A very confused, very lost teenage boy from Indiana. His name is Frotwoot Crossley. And he's about to find out that, somehow, that's not even the weirdest thing about him....

Any additional comments?
*Author provided a copy of the book for review.
I feel like I should leave two different reviews here, one for adult and one for younger listeners.
My nephew was listening to this book on our trip and would get upset when we had to stop when he is usually the one that gets bored and wants to stop at every single rest area so that was a huge positive. He liked the characters and was blown away with the ending which had him cheering and me laughing at how excited he was. There was the perfect amount of build up for the end of the book and enough misdirection to keep him wondering what was going to happen.
For my personal side I was not a fan of the narrator, but I like listening to monotone books which is a personal preference. There was a clear distinction between which character was speaking or performing an action so overall the performance was good.
I like this unique take on the Fay courts and the explanation why some technology is available while others are not.
I dislike some of Frotwoots reaction in the book. I realize he is a kid that is in over his head and dealing with a strange situation, but his actions are not always consistent which does detract from my enjoyment of the story. I would have to go back and re-listen to the book but Frotwoot actions when he is in danger can be drastically different when he is meekly following others and doing what he is told. Frotwoot can risk his very life one minute and then be completely passive the next and it doesn't always suit him or the story.
Overall I would recommend this to any younger reader, people who like to hear an imaginative new twist on the Fay courts, or anyone wanting to listen to an interesting and involved story.
Not great on driving long distance as the narration is a little distracting, which is the majority of the time I listen to audio books.
