Historia
The Story of Russia is about how the Russians defined themselves―and repeatedly reinvented such definitions along the way. Moving from Russia’s agrarian beginnings in the first millennium to subsequent periods of monarchy, totalitarianism, and perestroika, all the way up to Vladimir Putin and his use of myths of Russian history to bolster his regime, celebrated historian Orlando Figes examines the ideas that have guided the country’s actions.

Too biased
Revisado: 12-17-23
The author does a great job with doing a quick walkthrough Russia’s history. No one can argue his expertise in this area. His problem is that he is so blindly anti-Putin, that it really undermines his credibility for anything post-Yeltsin which is really sad. The wheels come off when he talks Ukraine essentially blaming everything on Putins ‘twisted’ views, almost failing to address any malfeasance from NATO and the collective west. Figes is almost obsessed with criticizing Putin so take this into consideration; unfortunately to get a balanced assessment of Putin, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

Historia
Chichikov, a mysterious stranger, arrives in the provincial town of 'N', visiting a succession of landowners and making each a strange offer. He proposes to buy the names of dead serfs still registered on the census, saving their owners from paying tax on them, and to use these 'dead souls' as collateral to re-invent himself as a aristocrat. In this ebullient picaresque masterpiece, Gogol created a grotesque gallery of human types, from the bear-like Sobakevich to the insubstantial fool Manilov and, above all, the devilish con man Chichikov.

Excellent Narration
Revisado: 03-19-22
First off, the narrator is superb. He skillfully represents each character in the book with distinction. Very entertaining. Secondly, Gogol never finished this book so don’t expect a grand finale, but enjoy the journey of Chichikov and all of the looney characters he meets. Also take pleasure in the tangents and rambles that the author often entreats the reader-they often add a dash of humor and witticism. Keeping this in mind, the story is very enjoyable. It’s a shame that this book was never completed but it does end at the very least with some things being concluded.

Historia
Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) leads the great names of Russian literature. After completing his education, Pushkin devoted himself to the pleasures of society, alongside his writing. In 1820 he was banished to the Caucasus for writing and promoting liberal views. Deprived of his social life, Pushkin devoted himself to his writing and bequeathed to the world some of the greatest poetry and stories ever written. He met his death in a duel in 1837.

Historia
The Caucasus mountains rise at the intersection of Europe, Russia, and the Middle East. A land of astonishing natural beauty and a dizzying array of ancient cultures, the Caucasus for most of the 20th century lay inside the Soviet Union, before movements of national liberation created newly independent countries and sparked the devastating war in Chechnya.

fascinating story of a messy region
Revisado: 07-30-20
I had no prior knowledge or even interest in the Caucasus and really just decided to branch out to learn something new. I am glad that I did. The content is so interesting and really walks you through the history of this whimsical region. I ended up buying the print version also because it was so interesting and I wanted to have it for reference. This book also opened me up to further topics of interest that I newly discovered while listening to tumultuous history of this land.

Good high level summary
Revisado: 06-21-20
There is only so much one can fit into one hour when covering a topic such as Bonaparte. This book did a great job covering the basics, and made the story of Napoleon an interesting one. I also tend to like when the author narrates. That was an hour well spent.

millenials need this book
Revisado: 05-16-20
Mark delivers excellence as is always expected from him. I listened to this in 2020 so some of the facts are dated, yet it was still so relevant. I wish Mark would narrate his books, that is my only complaint although the narrator does do a fine job. I hope he does a follow up to this book now that we have seen what the obama administration had done to Michael Flynn.
