Historia
Emma Bau, 19, has been married only three weeks when Nazi tanks thunder into her native Poland. Within days, Emma’s husband, Jacob, is forced to disappear underground, leaving her imprisoned within the city’s decrepit Jewish ghetto. But then, in the dead of night, the resistance smuggles her out. Taken to Krakow to live with Jacob’s Catholic aunt Krysia, Emma takes on a new identity as Anna Lipowski, a gentile. Emma’s already precarious situation is complicated by her introduction to Kommandant Richwalder, a high-ranking Nazi official who hires her to work as his assistant.

Interesting perspective
Revisado: 04-06-25
This was an interesting take on a story that we all know the ending to. About halfway through the book you begin to wonder how things can ever be successfully resolved. The narrator seemed perfect to me - I forgot it was being narrated and became immersed in the characters.

The value of historical novels demonstrated in this book
Revisado: 01-19-25
The story line was great - a part of history that needs more exposure.
Certainly…tears at the conclusion despite the predictably.
Helen’s narration was distracting (to me). She sounded elderly and always about to start crying. It was either genius or annoying, can’t work it out.

Pretty good idea for a plot
Revisado: 05-06-24
Easy listen, in terms of you didn’t have to really concentrate to follow the storyline. Interesting plot, although some parts dragged a bit. Definitely not a book with lofty lessons to be learned, but a pretty good summer listen.

Unneeded political references
Revisado: 02-17-24
Have loved her previous books. Disappointed that this one pushed a political agenda - especially when some of it seemed unnecessary for the story. Certainly if that is what you are looking for in a novel, this may be your cup of tea. It just does not appeal to me, and seemed to make this book less of a literary triumph as compared to her previous books. So many unlikeable characters made it rather difficult to engage.

Historia
Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Didn’t expect to dislike this book as much as I did …
Revisado: 11-18-23
Almost every character was obnoxious (let’s be reminded AGAIN how unattractive Elsa is), except possibly Rafe’s parents and Anthony (not using the silly nickname).
Over the top and unconvincing negativity from Elsa’s parents, her husband, her daughter (wish I could have slapped that one). Sophomoric conversations (was this a YA book?). I actually went back to look at the publication date, thinking possibly it was an early work before Hannah became a more accomplished writer. It was not. To compound the misery, there was absolutely no reprieve from the agony.
Then if that all was not bad enough…the narrative turns political. If I had known, I would not have started this book, as I read novels for entertainment and education - NOT lectures on communism. So now, a teen with intermittent educational opportunities goes to a library and checks out/ reads The Communist Manifesto … wow. If I had wanted a lecture on politics (which I would NOT have) I would have picked a non fiction book that presents facts, not propaganda.
Didn’t want to consider my time and credit totally wasted, so I let the audiobook play on. It didn’t require much concentration as it was superficial and predictable, so I was able to complete various other tasks while the book droned on (and on).
I enjoyed The Nightingale, but doubt I will ever read another Hannah book as this, for me, was so awful.
The narration was fine, but it was comprised by the story - which clearly I did not enjoy.

Loved the story.
Narrator was great … but do wish there had been at least a hint of an eastern accent. That is just a personal preference, but it does enhance the story for me.

The case against Lyndon B. Johnson and his role in Kennedy's assassination has never been sounder. LBJ aims to prove that Vice President Johnson played an active role in the assassination of President Kennedy and that he began planning his takeover of the U.S. presidency even before being named the vice presidential nominee in 1960. Nelson's careful and meticulous research has led him to uncover secrets from one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in our country's history.

Couldn’t stop listening!
Revisado: 07-14-23
Just when you think you have heard it all…
I expected this to be a rather dry listen.
I was wrong. Some of the new information that seemed particularly outrageous caused me to research and cross reference as much as possible from my limited resources. Everything is confirmed by two or three other sources. Even if you can’t bring yourself to the conclusion that LBJ was behind the assassination, you certainly can not read this and come away believing LHO was the lone shooter.

Indian American journalist Smita has returned to India to cover a story, but reluctantly: long ago she and her family left the country with no intention of ever coming back. As she follows the case of Meena—a Hindu woman attacked by members of her own village and her own family for marrying a Muslim man—Smita comes face to face with a society where tradition carries more weight than one’s own heart, and a story that threatens to unearth the painful secrets of Smita’s own past.

It has been quite a while since I have listened to a book that has caused such deep emotions. It was quite difficult at times to continue because the subject matter so painful, but ultimately worth the tears.
The narrator was perfect.

Very annoying
Revisado: 09-02-22
This story was a slap in the face to all adoptive mothers. To suggest that they can not be an adequate nurturer to their adopted child is infuriating.
And in addition, to represent all nurses as cold, uncaring shrews adds another level of annoyance.
The story too predictable to endure the irritation it generates.

Some cryptic words wake college student Jess Ballard from a terrifying dream into an even more terrifying reality. Jess’ life has never been what anyone would call easy; doing damage control in the wake of your nomadic, alcoholic mother doesn't exactly make for a storybook childhood. But now, her world has fallen apart just when it should be coming together: her mother gone—dead under mysterious circumstances; her life uprooted to stay with estranged relatives she’s never met; and there’s something odd about some of the people she’s been meeting at school: They’re dead.

My mistake
Revisado: 06-26-22
I purchased this book not realizing it was a young adult or even teen fiction. From that perspective, it was probably well written although predictable. The narrator is well suited to the young adult genre. Sadly, I am not viewing it from a young adult perspective so I found the book hard to stick to (since the purchase was my mistake, I felt obligated to complete it). Conversations were silly and narration annoying. So, maybe my rating of three stars is not fair, but it is what it is!
This book is very well suited for a teenager, and in their eyes I can understand a five star rating.
