Historia
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

Quasi-impersonal writer, grandly-imagined novel!
Revisado: 05-18-24
I’m too late to the game to influence anyone. It’s a mixed bag for me. Many great ideas. RP does not relate the personal, the feelings, or psychology in the manner that I require. I appreciated the brilliance more than the realism on humanity, which was a lengthy downer. Also, the narrator impressed me throughout.

Historia
Every time we eat, we have the power to radically transform the world we live in. Our choices can help alleviate the most pressing issues we face today: the climate crisis, infectious and chronic diseases, human exploitation and, of course, non-human exploitation. Undeniably, these issues can be uncomfortable to learn about but the benefits of doing so cannot be overstated. It is quite literally a matter of life and death.

Compelling, researched and articulate writing on animals, environment and veganism
Revisado: 04-30-22
I loved this book! Compelling and articulate evidence-based writing on animal agriculture and veganism. Everything was covered with purpose. The author does not repeat or meander.
This seems so well researched it could be used as a high school or college textbook. I imagine students will find it consistently interesting and engaging. Please read it if you are curious, as books on this subject don’t come any better.
Warning: The chapter on animal processing was thorough and the material was so rough, even for me who is quite familiar. Don’t let this stop you from reading the rest. You can always come back to this chapter when you are ready.
Highlights: The advice on talking with others about animal ag and veganism was especially insightful.
The final chapter was the most personal and visionary. I am thrilled with the author’s recommendations. I feel that the more you think about these issues, the more they will resonate.

Historia
Here, the man who started the "food revolution" with the million-plus-selling Diet for a New America, boldly posits that, collectively, our personal diet can save ourselves and the world. If, according to chaos theory, the beating of a butterfly's wing can cause a hurricane in another part of the world, try this out for chaotic cause and effect: monarch butterflies are dying in droves due to genetically-engineered corn growing in the Midwest. There is also a direct correlation between the Big Mac in your hand and the mile-wide river now running across the North Pole.

Comprehensive and insightful; never boring
Revisado: 03-09-16
Where does The Food Revolution rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This was my favorite nonfiction. I was greatly impressed with what may have been unparalleled insight. Amazingly, this book was written 16 years ago, but is still very relevant! .Unfortunately, it is also a call to action, as you can appreciate just how little progress we have made, especially in the US. With more awareness, action will certainly follow!
What did you like best about this story?
John Robbins has an ability to say so much, clearly and quickly - this is great writing. The references were excellent, and you know when you are getting a personal opinion and when you are getting fact. I have read or listened to many books (blogs, podcasts, as well) on how the environment, animal welfare, and human health are deeply interconnected. Many books on these subjects can be dry with too much data and reference material. This was abridged nicely with a nice flow making continual and lasting mental impressions. There were around 70 chapters each covering a topic for 5 minutes or so.
Which character – as performed by John Robbins – was your favorite?
It was a real treat having John read his book. His sincerity shined though, while the other narrators, used for role-play, effectively kept me engaged.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Because so much troubling information is presented, I sometimes needed a a break.

Enlightening and well done
Revisado: 02-25-16
Some sections were dry but interesting; while others were very memorable. Comprehensive, journalistic, valuable.
Given the title, and that I'm vegan, the author's quest is not completely mine. Nonetheless, I really appreciate the author's integrity and commitment.

Excellent overview on US education
Revisado: 11-13-13
This book presents a US-centric view of how and why we are trending steadily downward in education, creating young adults who don't think as well as they would like. It made me realize this trend is not the fault of the teachers nor the students, but there is a lot we can do to affect positive change if we get involved in the right way. The book shows us the possibilities by looking closely at some other countries. I learned a lot. This book was journalistic and broad minded, as opposed to being heavy handed and forcing you to conclusions, and it is easy to stay focused with the audio version.

Historia
On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge.

Clever, creative and interesting
Revisado: 08-09-13
Would you try another book from Gillian Flynn and/or Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne ?
I might give the author another listen. Not many authors do everything well, but I appreciate her considerable strengths. Julia Whelan was a perfect match for Amy, and I was very impressed with her portrayal. Kirby Heyborne did a nice job with Nick. It is reading like this that makes the audio format such a fun option.
Which character – as performed by Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne – was your favorite?
Amy. Thanks for the great reading, Julia Whelan!
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Not unconditionally - it would need a very intelligent and gifted actress to play Amy, or I think it loses too much. I just checked and David Fincher is directing, so I will definitely see it in 2015!
Any additional comments?
I am glad I listened and am impressed with the author - creative, clever, thoughtful. The author gives a good look at the current state of news and media, public opinion and the legal system. I confess I found it unpleasant and draining to spend some 20 hours primarily with a sociopath and a narcissist/borderline. However, that comes with the territory for this story, and it delivers some interesting rewards. In the final third, I needed more verisimilitude, and some of the twists were more capricious or convenient than earned. Finally, the ending, taken at face value, or as an opening for a sequel, was a disappointment, as I try to, but I do not, buy it.
