Historia
Essa Montgomery and her brother Clyde were brought up in New Hope, a serpent-handling church in Vintera, West Virginia, until the shocking deaths of both their parents closed the church down. Now twenty, reclusive Essa lives alone in her childhood home in the shadow of New Hope, which to her horror has been taken over by a new charismatic, unsettling pastor who continues the dangerous practice. So when the church burns down, she's glad—until she learns that two people died in the blaze, and her brother's the prime suspect.

Loved this story
Revisado: 04-22-25
This was quite a ride from beginning to end, and I haven’t had a visceral reaction to an antagonist in a while. I was already recommending it to friends and family a third of the way through.

Historia
A queen now in exile as a traitor, Lara has watched Ithicana be conquered by her own father, helpless to do anything to stop the destruction. But when she learns her husband, Aren, has been captured in battle, Lara knows there is only one reason her father is keeping him alive: as bait for his traitorous daughter. And it is bait she fully intends to take. Risking her life to the Tempest Seas, Lara returns to Ithicana with a plan not only to free its king, but for liberating the Bridge Kingdom from her father’s clutches using his own weapons: the sisters whose lives she spared.

Historia
In The Small and the Mighty, Sharon McMahon proves that the most remarkable Americans are often ordinary people who didn’t make it into the textbooks. Not the presidents, but the telephone operators. Not the aristocrats, but the schoolteachers. Through meticulous research, she discovers history’s unsung characters and brings their rich, riveting stories to light for the first time.

The book I didn’t know I needed
Revisado: 03-25-25
I have felt discouraged, overwhelmed, and more than a little freaked out. This book reminded me that kindness and dedication is what it takes to maybe not save the world, but sweep up my little section of it. I hope you enjoy it too!

Really good
Revisado: 10-20-24
First of all Juliette Stevenson’s reading is excellent! This is a wonderful story, it meanders the way Victorian novels do, but feels more prescient to our modern day than Dickens or Brontë. This book, like North and South, blends the romance with the economic theories perfectly. I can’t believe that Keyes was not a fan of Gaskell. As she blends empathy and religious responsibility into the question of “Why some have all and others have none?”

Historia
If the Bible isn’t a science book or an instruction manual, then what is it? What do people mean when they say the Bible is inspired? When Rachel Held Evans found herself asking these questions, she began a quest to better understand what the Bible is and how it is meant to be read. What she discovered changed her—and it will change you too.
Drawing on the best in recent scholarship and using her well-honed literary expertise, Evans examines some of our favorite Bible stories and possible interpretations, retelling them through memoir, original poetry, short stories, soliloquies, and even a short screenplay. Undaunted by the Bible’s most difficult passages, Evans wrestles through the process of doubting, imagining, and debating Scripture’s mysteries. The Bible, she discovers, is not a static work but is a living, breathing, captivating, and confounding book that is able to equip us to join God’s loving and redemptive work in the world.

Beauty in heartache
Revisado: 09-24-24
The thing I’ll take away from this more than anything is the reminder that I am a part of along human story. This story has good and bad, is full of flawed people making hard choices and coping with the consequences. It is not easy answers, but instead loving compassionate hard truths.

Historia
On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge.

I enjoyed it
Revisado: 09-12-24
Yes, it’s over top and melodramatic, and that’s what makes it fun. Amy and Nick are over the top, but in a way that to me felt believable because we all know people who would blow up the world just to feel seen for a minute. Amy’s calculating schemes and Nick’s stereotypical mediocre dude-ness leave you grateful for a calm night at home. Their lunacy makes ordinary feel luxurious.

Revisado: 02-24-24
I liked the story well enough, a friend had recommended it a while back. But the reading was excellent! She balanced all the voices and accents perfectly, giving each character a lovely depth. I’m not sure if I am an Eva Ibston fan, but I am now definitely a fan of Adjoa Andoh!

Historia
Concerned that technology is about to chase mythological creatures out into the open (how long can Sasquatch stay hidden from Google maps?), the League for Interspecies Cooperation is sending Jillian to Louisiana on a fact-finding mission. While the League hopes to hold on to secrecy for a little bit longer, they're preparing for the worst in terms of human reactions. They need a plan, so they look to Mystic Bayou, a tiny town hidden in the swamp where humans and supernatural residents have been living in harmony for generations.

I wanted something fun and light, this completely fit the bill (with just the right amount sex). This is the book version of chocolate ice cream, a sweet little treat. The male reader did a good enough job with the accent, and I totally believed the female reader was from Ohio.
