Historia
The insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, was not a blip or an aberration. It was the logical outcome of years of a White evangelical subculture's preparation for war. Religion scholar and former insider Bradley Onishi maps the origins of White Christian nationalism and traces its offshoots in Preparing for War.

Important read for anyone concerned about our Republic
Revisado: 06-16-24
This is a must read for anyone attempting to understand why some white American evangelicals are so laser focused on controlling the government at the local, state and Federal levels.

Historia
For much of his life, historian Howard Zinn chronicled American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version taught in schools - with its emphasis on great men in high places - to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of - and in the words of - America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.

As a history nerd, I appreciate an American history book that tells the history of this country from a perspective other than that of those in power.

Historia
Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

Revisado: 10-12-19
This book is groundbreaking. It drives home the insidiousness of denying someone the memory of who their people are, and the ugliness of denying another’s story. One of the best books I’ve ever read.

Historia
More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

Historia
Andrew Roberts' Napoleon is the first one-volume biography to take advantage of the recent publication of Napoleon's thirty-three thousand letters, which radically transform our understanding of his character and motivation. At last we see him as he was: protean multitasker, decisive, surprisingly willing to forgive his enemies and his errant wife Josephine.

Bit of a fanboy look at old Boney...
Revisado: 09-23-19
Is Roberts the president of the Napoleon fan club? It kind of seems like it. Enjoyed the book but I feel like I have to read another biography of him to experience another perspective, one a little less fawning perhaps. Worth the read though.

Historia
Almost 2.5 million Americans have served in Afghanistan or Iraq since September 11, 2001. C.J. Chivers has reported from both fronts from the beginning, walking side by side with combatants for more than a dozen years. He describes the experience of war today as it is endured by those most at risk - the camaraderie and profound sense of purpose, alongside courage, frustration, and moral confusion mixed with technical precision. In these remote places where the reason for their presence is sometimes not clear, these young men kill or are killed, facing palpable and often constant threat of ambush or hidden bombs....

This book should be required reading for every American
Revisado: 09-16-18
It’s up-close and personal first person accounts of war that really give you a sense of what the reality is for fighters and civilians in war zones. I like that Chivers focused on individuals and showed how decisions made by the American public and Congress impacted American soldiers. This is one of the best books about war, and the best book about modern war, I’ve ever read.

Historia
American diplomacy is under siege. Offices across the State Department sit empty while abroad, the military-industrial complex has assumed the work once undertaken by peacemakers. We're becoming a nation that shoots first and asks questions later. In an astonishing account ranging from Washington, DC, to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and North Korea in the years since 9/11, acclaimed journalist and former diplomat Ronan Farrow illuminates one of the most consequential and poorly understood changes in American history.

Revisado: 08-06-18
His access is unparalleled, his narrative flair inspired, and his ability to weave a concise story illustrating how the US has walked away from serious diplomacy in the last 20 years is an epic achievement. I’ve long respected Farrow, but this work is transcendent. Every American should read this book.

Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

The Underrated Grant
Revisado: 11-26-17
This book completely changed my perceptions of this under-appreciated president. What a forward-thinking, compassionate, reluctant leader. Where would the country be if he hadn't been at the helm of reconstruction? Even with him trying to protect freed blacks in the south, massacres happened. I couldn't imagine what would've transpired if a vindictive racist would have occupied the executive branch. I like this book because it dispels the myth that the Civil War wasn't about slavery, it was. Black troops may have never had the chance to take up arms against their oppressors if not for Grant's confidence in their ability to fight. Great book and superb writing.
