Sorry the second book isn't available.....
Revisado: 05-16-22
but perhaps not. I enjoyed the historical periods described in the story very much. Good hustorical context and all mysteries are resolved. I read it through to the end. I like historical mysteries and the story held my interest. I wish the second book in this series was available here. That being said, I can't tell whether I dislike the protagonist, or the narration of her. I wasn't impressed by clipped voice assigned to her by the narrator who has read 130 books for this platform. It seems the narrator likes to do voices, and in fairness, there is a lot of dialogue and many characters, a few too many. Perhaps she also found the character a challenge and it shows. In subsequent books, the protagonist may smoothe out or fill in. Sometimes details are overexplained in the first book of a series. This genealogist is a bit of a swashbuckler, if that term can be ascribed to woman. It is hard to like, or even pity, the client, and i don't know whether I like the genealogist, both characters can be impatient and rude. I would like to give the genealogist a second chance, but not enough to waste the vision that I do have to read it.

Historia
On the evening of November 24, 1971, D. B. Cooper hijacked Flight 305—Portland to Seattle—with a fake bomb, collected a ransom of $200,000, and then parachuted from the rear of the plane, disappearing into the night...and into history. Fifty years later, Agent Pendergast takes on a bizarre and gruesome case: in the ghost-haunted city of Savannah, Georgia, bodies are found with no blood left in their veins—sowing panic and reviving whispered tales of the infamous Savannah Vampire.

Constance, yikes
Revisado: 08-24-21
I never write reviews, but I have to agree with previous reviewers, poor Constance. Why does she have the voice of a harpy and Ma Kettle. Like Coldmoon, I was ready to go to Denver! Maybe it will lead to something new.

Interesting, if a little melodramatic......
Revisado: 06-27-17
What did you love best about Ancient Blood?
It isn't Hillerman, but I enjoyed some of the explanations as to which tribes are invested in which part of Native history. I found some of the characters a lttle old fashioned, but it kept my interest.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Not exactly on the edge of my seat, but it interested me enough to finish the book! I felt slightly confused by much of the action. The plot was far less interesting than the interpretation and theory of what was discovered.
What about Kaipo Schwab’s performance did you like?
I liked the rather peaceful pace and humor of the narration. I found it relaxing and engaging.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I didn't listen to it all at once, but had I been driving perhaps. I liked the different ideas as to how the dead and history should be treated, found it something to reflect upon rather than to rush through.

And then two of the boys go astray.... Decades later single father Odinn is looking into alleged abuse at the center. Better without Thora
Revisado: 06-17-17
What did you love best about The Undesired?
I like the central character.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Undesired?
The beginning is memorable!
What does Karen Cass and Nick Underwood bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
They spoke clearly.
Any additional comments?
After my first venture into Icelandic suspense, I was ready to send this back and I am glad I didn't. This book held my interest. I gave it four stars because..... Well read it and see what you think, but it was an easier read than the first Thora also by Yrsa Sigurdardottir.

If you love dog mysteries
Revisado: 06-17-17
Would you listen to Suspect again? Why?
I could, but it seems so memorable, so not immediately. I'm going on to his second book!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Suspect?
The final conflict. Don't want to spoil this, but the action was very clear while I was listening, Sometimes I need to replay the end, or even the first chapter, to keep track of the players in the scene, but due to the clear separations and narration, I could follow the action moment by moment.
Which scene was your favorite?
The dog's introduction to the house.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I was very moved, but as I say I love dog mysteries or dog books. Not enough to read the poorly written ones, but this is a page turner. A few books that I've listened to can't even be saved by a dog!
Any additional comments?
I listened to this as a result of reading a review I received. I receive these reviews regularly and I always appreciate them even if the book is not for me.

Historia
At a university in Reykjavík, the body of a young German student is discovered, his eyes cut out and strange symbols carved into his chest. Police waste no time in making an arrest, but the victim's family isn't convinced that the right man is in custody. They ask Thóra Gudmundsdóttir, an attorney and single mother of two, to investigate. It isn't long before Thóra and her associate, Matthew Reich, uncover the deceased student's obsession with Iceland's grisly history of torture, execution, and witch hunts.

Who Cares
Revisado: 06-09-17
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Neither the historical subject of this book, nor the characters, ever quite caught my interest. I usually like a mystery with history. The self-absorbed central character, Thora, seems to be very intelligent and a quick study, but initially sexually naive to no purpose and boringly caught up in the vicissitudes of her daily life. It is hard to believe she studied in Germany or anywhere abroad. Her motive for doing this investigation is the money, which she needs to maintain her house, because she's recently divorced. The mystery and other characters are treated byThora alternatively as sensational, ghoulish, eccentric or just plain foolish. This is the silliness obsessional rich academic foreigners get up to! Thora has no empathy with the victims, present or past. She laments she can't afford to eat out or stay in hotels for fun. I kept thinking that as a listener, I should be paid. When she ran home, I thought of checking my laundry. I couldn't wait for this to be over. Compared to other weakly plotted mysteries that are carried by their introspective investigators who become interested in their subjects and draw in the reader, this story seems merely reported and rather thin. Possibly this book is written to appeal to working mothers. The narrator goes on and on about the language barrier, missing her children, the vagaries of life after divorce. Maybe she is typically Icelandic in the mind of the author. My problem is I didn't much care. I did finish the book to see how it came out, despite the annoying narration, but this isn't Rome, or even Three Pines. She's not Jane Eyre or the Nanny in the Turn of the Screw.
Would you be willing to try another book from Yrsa Sigurdardottir? Why or why not?
I would try another book because she writes well, despite the fact that I cannot pronounce her name.
What aspect of Elizabeth Wiley’s performance would you have changed?
The broken English dialogue drove me crazy. I found it took enormous effort to remain attentive, which was partly the narration and partly because the character had things to do at home.
Do you think Last Rituals: A Novel of Suspense needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I wouldn't listen to the second book because Thora is not appealing.
