Most of the time when you read a book and then watch the film adaptation, you say to yourself, "The book was better." This book in my opinion was way worse than the film adaptation, The author spends way too much time talking about the nostalgic 80s era and its influence on this futuristic setting. If you were to strip down all the times the author mentions an 80s reference (and then goes in detail about this reference) you'd be left with a much shorter story. Another thing I couldn't get over were the awkward and cringy interactions the characters have with one another. The dialogue is so cheesy and bland I couldn't help but think I could have written better character dialogue than this. I read about half of this book before I couldn't read anymore because I hated the dialogue so much. Months later I saw the movie adaptation for the first time and thought I wasn't going to like it because how awful the book was but as it turned out, I actually really enjoyed the movie. Sure the movie doesn't follow the book as the events happen verbatim but whoever wrote the script did a much better job making the characters much more engaging and less cheesy. Performance was OK, but not good enough to keep me listening.

Narrator does a great job capturing the essence and psychedelic vibe of the 60s as he recites Tom Wolfe's story on Ken Kesey and his group of Merry Pranksters

Although it's quite a lengthy book, it is magnificently written like one long train of thought of a man traveling across America in the late 1940s and early 50s. The narrator does in excellent job giving life to the story.
