Historia
As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes. Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves.

Perfectly horrific masterpiece
Revisado: 03-31-25
It was all perfect. I’m gutted. This is a perfect tragedy; using Poe as the echo for Haymitch’s story is genius. A true masterpiece.

Historia
Silla Nordvig is running for her life. The Queen of Íseldur has sent warriors to bring Silla to Sunnavík, where death awaits her. When her father is killed, his last words set Silla on a perilous quest: travel the treacherous Road of Bones—a thousand-mile stretch haunted by warbands, creatures of darkness, and a mysterious murderer—and go to Kopa, where a shield house awaits her. After barely surviving the first stretch of road, a desperate Silla sneaks into a supply wagon belonging to the notorious Bloodaxe Crew. To make it to Kopa, she must win over Axe Eyes, the brooding leader of the Crew.

Excellent story & phenomenal narration.
Revisado: 02-19-24
I’m a romance book editor & am extremely picky about narration, too. I almost never leave reviews because I know my standards for storytelling are, well… high. Very high. That to say: this book is 10/10 for me, both in the story itself and in the performance. I’ll expand a bit below, but is this paragraph is all you read, please know that this story alone has propelled me to go and purchase every other book Demi Winters has written.
Story Craft analysis: I am a diehard believer in the craft theory of GMC: goals, motivation, conflict. So many stories have “problems” but not “conflict,” and conflict is created when characters’ respective motivations and goals butt against one another— hence the “conflict”. Excellent storytelling— excellent conflict— is born of character who are *perfectly* motivated with disparate goals. We can cheer on characters who do heinous things as long as we understand their motivations — as long as they make sense (this is why Jaime Lannister is redeemable despite pushing a child out the window the first time we meet him).
It is beyond rare when I get to read a story with so perfectly written characters. And I mean *perfect*.
Every single one is amazingly motivated. Amazingly written characters leading to twists and hooks in the story few will anticipate.
Second: the prose is absolutely gorgeous. Not a “white room syndrome” in sight.
I won’t spoil anything, but I would challenge anyone to find a book to top this one for me this year. Simply amazing.
The only complaint I have is that I haven’t signed this author to work with myself— which is purely self serving. lol.
Moral of the story: any minute you wait to push this book back further on your TBR is a minute wasted on something less enjoyable

Historia
In the mid-1990s, residents of Anniston, Alabama, began a legal fight against the agrochemical company Monsanto over the dumping of PCBs in the city's historically African American and white working-class west side. Simultaneously, Anniston environmentalists sought to safely eliminate chemical weaponry that had been secretly stockpiled near the city during the Cold War. In this probing work, Ellen Griffith Spears offers a compelling narrative of Anniston's battles for environmental justice.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes for reading. no for this account. The voice reading it sounds computer generated, and the tone of odd.
How could the performance have been better?
Yes.
