Historia
Neil Josten is the newest addition to the Palmetto State University Exy team. He's short, he's fast, he's got a ton of potential - and he's the runaway son of the murderous crime lord known as the Butcher. Signing a contract with the PSU Foxes is the last thing a guy like Neil should do. The team is high profile, and he doesn't need sports crews broadcasting pictures of his face around the nation. His lies will hold up only so long under this kind of scrutiny, and the truth will get him killed.

Historia
In this gloriously over-the-top tale, Aoyama, a widower who has lived alone with his son ever since his wife died seven years before, finally decides it is time to remarry. Since Aoyama is a bit rusty when it comes to dating, a filmmaker friend proposes that, in order to attract the perfect wife, they do a casting call for a movie they don't intend to produce. As the resumes pile up, only one of the applicants catches Aoyama's attention - Yamasaki Asami - a striking young former ballerina with a mysterious past. But she is a far cry from the innocent young woman he imagines her to be.

What happened?
Revisado: 01-04-24
If you’re expecting something sinister and worthwhile throughout the book… you’re in the wrong place. The majority of this book is a long lead up for something that happens within the last 30 or so minutes of the novel and then it just ends abruptly. Needless to say, I expected more and didn’t get that; those last 30 minutes were a little insane. Be warned, however, that there is a rather brutal animal death during the end section of this novel. Wasn’t a fan of that.

The author holds my heart in their hands
Revisado: 12-01-23
From the jump this book hand me in its grasp and didn’t let go one bit. This book really hit me in my feelings multiple times, stressed me out more times than that, and all this to say that Ashley is an exceptional author.
I’m contemplating on whether or not I should self induce a coma so I don’t have to consciously wait for the finale to come out.

Historia
Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by - palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing - are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive. But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs.

I wish I could’ve liked this
Revisado: 10-22-23
I am so upset I didn’t enjoy this book.
Nahri was decent in the beginning but then she started to annoy every fiber of my being. She talks about wanting her own little clinic and to find out about the language only she seemed to know how to speak. She’s literally handed a clinic and fumbles it, always cryin about not knowing how to do anything without actually remedying that fact in her free time like she does after her argument with the assistant. She’s finally surrounded by her people and their culture and just decides that it ain’t worth her time. Ignores her culture completely or disrespects it. And don’t get me started on either instances where she says the most vile things when she lashes out at people or generally doesn’t listen to others and gets upset with them when they’ve already made their stances clear 50 pages prior (Dara and the assistant) and she ain’t got the nerve to apologize? And that’s who you want me to root for? I’ll pass.
I can’t fully articulate my opinion on Dara except to say he’s a punk and he got what was comin for being a blood purist.
I did genuinely like Ali. He was a very interesting character to me, and I like that every time someone called him out, he would apologize. I don’t think he needed to apologize to certain people (Nahri) but he was a good soul for that.
It’s unlikely that I’ll continue on because I don’t think my love for Ali will out weigh my distaste for Nahri. It’s very unfortunate.

Not for me
Revisado: 10-22-23
This definitely is meant for the Reylo girlies, and I truly hope they enjoyed this book.
Unfortunately I am not one of them and if it weren’t for my bookclub, it’s unlikely that I’d’ve picked this up. I won’t go into too much detail of why other than I wasn’t a fan of the writing, characters or the plot. The further along the story went, the more I was reminded of how early 2000s Asian dramas character logic went, and I just don’t think it worked in these circumstances.
I will say that I liked the world building and I think Thea’s choice to use her own culture as inspiration for one of the setting was intricate and well done.
I won’t be continuing the series.

Emotional but worth while
Revisado: 02-22-23
I’ve read this book twice now, and twice I have sobbed throughout this novel. This book resonates with me so deeply that I can’t fully describe with words alone. I love this book so much.

One of the best YA novels of 2021!
Revisado: 04-12-22
Not only did this book have me the moment it started, it kept me captivated and eager to finish. Voya is a breath of fresh air in terms of YA protags, and I rooted for her while she struggled to figure out what she was meant to do.
There were so many aspects of this book I connected to on a personal level, to the point of tears because it mirrored aspects of my life that I’m not used to seeing in books. From the complex emotions of being the oldest child of divorced parents, to seeing a family dynamic that makes me think of my own, to being a trans man just like the love interest of this book.
Despite how things ended, I just want Voya and Luc to be happy! They’re both babies and I hope the next book will be kind to them (and me!) and at least let them have a decent next journey. August can’t come any sooner if you ask me!
