What’s the Point?
Revisado: 04-05-25
The quality of the reporting and the presentation far exceeds the appeal of the content. Farrow does an excellent job of creating a picture of his subject, a vain, narcissistic, and aging former beauty queen who appears to be suffering from some form of borderline personality disorder. Cece is simply a train wreck with a history of being associated with murders that almost happened but didn’t, extreme family dysfunction, etc. I liked the description of the Arizona well-to-do McMansion culture and found it to be pretty accurate based on personal experience. However, I felt that ultimately Cece came off as an interesting but not particularly likable person with low insight and limited self awareness. One probably can’t fault Farrow for being captivated by such a dysfunctional person. After all, he does have the burden of being the scion of one of America’s most famously dysfunctional families. Couldn’t help thinking that this reminded me of some of the sad and dysfunctional characters (minus the humor) portrayed in Ronan’s (possible?) father’s films.

Thoughts on Film and Spirituality
Revisado: 11-07-24
A very thoughtful book regarding film and spirituality. Contains meditations on a number of specific films ranging from well known and popular to the more obscure. There are two distinct voices here - Kathleen Norris who wrote Dakota and The Cloister Walk and her younger collaborator Gareth Higgins who is new to me. Both are excellent thinkers and I enjoyed this a lot. As far as the performance, I would have preferred two readers to one as that would have brought out the conversational aspect of the book and made it easier to distinguish the two voices. Perhaps keeping the current reader for Kathleen and finding a male reader for Gareth.

Historia
The first vice president to become president on the death of the incumbent, John Tyler (1790-1862) was derided by critics as "His Accidency." In this biography of the 10th president, Edward P. Crapol challenges depictions of Tyler as a die-hard advocate of states' rights, limited government, and a strict interpretation of the Constitution. Instead, he argues, Tyler manipulated the Constitution to increase the executive power of the presidency. Crapol also highlights Tyler's faith in America's national destiny and his belief in boundless territorial expansion.

Good Bio of No One’s Favorite President
Revisado: 10-25-24
Between 1837 and 1861, the US had a series of eight single (or less) term presidents, most of whom are rated poorly by historians. They are still important to study since their decisions shaped our history and the lives of millions. John Tyler was a southerner added to the Whig ticket for purposes of regional balance but not particularly in sync with the party. When William Henry Harrison passed unexpectedly after just one month in office, Tyler was elevated to the presidency but not particularly supported by his party and in fact has often been referred to as a “president without a party.” Plus, as a pro-slavery president who eventually joined the confederacy, he’s not gonna be anyone’s favorite by today’s standards. Nevertheless, he did have some success with foreign policy, encouraging national expansion, and setting precedent for succession when a sitting president passes away. Crapol presents a fair and balanced portrait of the man and how he affected our nation. I would have liked more personal details as little is said about his early life or his first wife. For that reason this biography doesn’t reach the heights achieved by biographers such as McCullough, Chaernow or Goodwin, but it is still pretty good and you have to give Crapol points for taking on a subject who many will approach with distaste and honestly evaluating his contributions and lack thereof.

Historia
In this masterful biography, historian Randall B. Woods peels back the many layers of John Quincy’s long life, exposing a rich and complicated family saga and a political legacy that transformed the American Republic. This deeply researched, brilliantly written volume delves into John Quincy’s intellectual pursuits and political thought; his loving, yet at times strained, marriage to Louisa Catherine Johnson, whom he met in London; his troubling relationships with his three sons; and his fiery post-presidency rebirth in Congress as he became the chamber’s most vocal opponent of slavery.

Comprehensive Bio of a Great Man
Revisado: 09-28-24
JQA may not have been one of our better presidents, but he was one of the best men to occupy the office. His true accomplishments lie elsewhere, in his early diplomatic career (often alongside his father), in his time as Secretary of State to James Monroe, and in his later time in the House of Representatives during which he became an early but highly effective opponent of slavery. This book is the third full length bio I have read on Adams and it is easily the most comprehensive and complete. However it is very long. For anyone wanting a shorter quicker read, Harlow Unger’s bio is excellent but for those wanting to do a deep dive, this is an excellent and highly recommended choice.

Very Helpful
Revisado: 03-25-23
I actually preferred this abridged audiobook to the print version because it was way more concise and still hit the main points. Her main thesis is that research shows that our level of happiness is determined by 50% genetics, 10% Circumstances and 40% by choices and habits. She proposes 12 strategies to increase happiness that are backed up by the research and gives a lot of helpful tips. I got bogged down in the print version, but think I will continue to refer to it. It’s really great stuff that provides tools that many of us need.

Historia
Man’s Search for Meaning is the chilling yet inspirational story of Viktor Frankl’s struggle to hold on to hope during the unspeakable horrors of his years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

Tragic Optimism
Revisado: 02-18-23
Reminded me a lot of the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible. Both are about how to find meaning in what appears to be a senseless world. It is a brave thing to develop a sense of tragic optimism in the face of certain suffering and death which we all must face.

Historia
What happens when one of America’s most beloved biographers writes his own biography? For five-time New York Times best-selling author Eric Metaxas, the answer is Fish Out of Water: A Search for the Meaning of Life - a soaring, lyrical, and often mischievous account of his early years, in which the astute Queens-born son of Greek and German immigrants struggles to make sense of a world in which he never quite seems to fit.

Worth Listening
Revisado: 09-25-22
Metaxas is an excellent writer and narrator and manages to entertain throughout an extremely detailed account of his first 25 years. It’s somewhat over long (do we really need three chapters of travelogue describing a post college trip through Europe?) and he seems to be trying to preserve a lot of personal memories that may or may not further the narrative. Still, parts of it are funny as hell and I loved his descriptions of his ethnically Greek extended family. I related to his “lost” period after college and his eventual opening to faith. If I were to write my own autobiography it would probably follow a similar argument arc, so I found this to be worth the time even if too drawn out.

Honest and True
Revisado: 05-13-22
A book for successful people about facing the inevitable declines that we all experience as we age. The author discusses how we can move through these passages using relationships, faith, acceptance, and reframing our expectations. It’s honest and true but a bit tough to hear. Mortality is scary.

Historia
In 2009, Mark R. Levin galvanized conservatives with his unforgettable manifesto Liberty and Tyranny, by providing a philosophical, historical, and practical framework for halting the liberal assault on Constitution-based values. That book was about standing at the precipice of progressivism’s threat to our freedom, and now, over a decade later, we’re fully over that precipice and paying the price. In American Marxism, Levin explains how the core elements of Marxist ideology are now pervasive in American society and culture.
