Historia
Few people know the name Vesper Quill. To most folks, I’m just a lowly lab rat who designs brewmakers and other household appliances in the research-and-development lab at the powerful Kent Corp. But when I point out a design flaw and a safety hazard in the new line of Kent Corp spaceships, everyone knows who I am—and wants to eliminate me. I might be a seer with a photographic memory, but I don’t see the trouble headed my way until it’s too late. Suddenly, I’m surrounded by enemies and fighting for my life.

Space Opera Romance
Revisado: 03-28-23
So you know its a good book when you finish listening to it for the first time in a few month and then immediately hit play again to start it over -- and then you tell your spouse and they go "I think you did that the first time you listened to it too"
I can't wait for the next book, with the balance of science, romance, and magic. Definitely would recommend to others interested in the same!

I've listened to this a few times, and each time I get caught up in Jessie Mihalik's story and Emily Woo Zeller's performance.
It is a Space Opera Romance and the beginning of a trilogy, so if that isn't your thing - then let this pass you by, but if you are willing to give it a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Historia
When Phoebe Meadows gets struck by a strange light in the stock room of Macy's, life as she knows it flies out the window. As if being hit by lightning isn't bad enough, she's accosted in the subway by a man with a missing hand, gets home to find a raven in her kitchen, and her neighbor Ingrid shows up dressed like a gladiator, hell-bent on protecting her. Before Ingrid can get her to safety, Phoebe is kidnapped and tossed into one of the Nine Worlds, where she's forced to come to terms with what she is: a Valkyrie.

Good Start to a New Series
Revisado: 07-26-16
What did you like best about this story?
I enjoyed that you didn't need a strong Norse background to follow it and there was a lot of uncertainty and growth. If Phoebe had been prepared for being struck and beginning the transformation process of becoming a Valkyrie, the story would be much less compelling
Have you listened to any of Emma Wilder’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I enjoyed it. She's not my most favorite narrator but she did well. She was very soft spoken in some internal dialogue that I had trouble focusing on when I was driving to work at 6am but I loved her character speaking voices.
Any additional comments?
My traveling companion was very concerned that I would listen to this book while I was at work or at home without her. i really appreciated that the WhisperSync function and latest Kindle update allowed me to read head without losing where she and I were in it.

Historia
Getting arrested wasn't on werewolf Ivy Kincaid's agenda when she arrived in Nocturne Falls, but her life rarely goes according to plan. The upside of spending the night in the local lock-up is finding a hotel room is no longer a worry...but the downside is the man she's come to marry will get his first impression of her behind bars. That's not exactly the way Ivy was hoping to meet her pack's sworn enemy...aka her fiancé.

Howling good time
Revisado: 02-03-16
Any additional comments?
I loved this book. I purchased the Werewolf Meets His Match the morning it came out because I loved the Vampire's Mail Order Bride so much... which might have been a mistake because it came out on a Wednesday and I had to be at work doing work-related things but was really weak in resisting the urge to read it while I sat at my desk writing work instructions and reviewing data.... or whatever it was I was doing on that particular day.
I finished it within 24 hours (conservatively) and loved it.
Like the first book, there were challenges and such that came from a lack of communication (secrets or misunderstandings) but nothing that dragged on to the point of stupidity like other romance (or humor) stories are known to do -- which I love about Kristen Painter's style. There was suspense and foreshadowing but it was really well balanced with the pacing of the book. I felt the relationship between Ivy and Hank, and Ivy and the town, developed well... and there were several moments of what I would go "Squeeeeeeeeeeeee!" and I close my eyes to just enjoy the emotions that washed over me from it.... which is super awesome. Ultimately was left wanting more of the Nocturne Falls community when it ended (and gratefully there is more!)... and I'm curious about how the supernaturals handle mundane things like Jury Duty in this wonderful little town. If Kristen wrote about it in this little town, I would read it, that's how much I love the world she built.
The story stood well on its own but there were awesome asides to the previous book (example, Delaney making an aside to Ivy about arranged marriages) that might have been lost on readers who didn't read the first book. It was great and I'm looking forward to a good weekend when I can mainline Nocturne Falls again :)
The technical side of the audio was good. The pacing was great by the reader but a few of the character voices were weird for me (mostly the male Kincaids) but that won't stop me from listening to more in the future :)

After seeing her maybe-mobster boss murder a guy, Delaney James assumes a new identity and pretends to be a mail order bride. She finds her groom-to-be living in a town that celebrates Halloween every day. Weird. But not as weird as what she doesn't know. Her groom-to-be is a 400-year-old vampire.

Fang-tacular Fluff
Revisado: 11-04-15
If you could sum up The Vampire's Mail Order Bride in three words, what would they be?
BalancedIntelligentFun
Which character – as performed by B.J. Harrison – was your favorite?
I'm not sure which was my favorite... maybe Stanhill, but mostly because B.J. Harrison kept a much more consistent accent than the voice in my head did when I read the book myself.
I had not heard anything by this narrator before but I really enjoyed his voice. I will seek out other reads by him. I hope he reads the rest of the series :)
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Wanted to - yes. Able to, no. Life kept getting in the way. I had already read the book and knew it was enjoyable but loved that I got swept away again with as much marvel and joy as I did when I read the book for the first time months ago.
Any additional comments?
I've dipped into the Nocturne Falls pool a few times and it is refreshing each time and each manner. I'm eager for the next story in audio, even though I've read it myself several times. It's great to be able to re-listen to a favorite when I'm doing repetitive but detailed actions at work. There isn't much demand on the reader in this series but there is great reward for those who care to visit the town where Halloween is every day.

A Great Gem
Revisado: 12-09-13
Where does Khan of Mars rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This will be on the "frequently listened to" list, up there with Ready Player One, the Agatha H's and Fuzzy Nation as something to enjoy when I need a familiar tale.
Have you listened to any of Oliver Wyman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Oliver Wyman does a great job reading this. I love that he also did the Dinocalypse series because he keeps a great continuity in the universe. I'd happily seek out other books he's read
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I practically did, between the audio and the ebook.
Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to dive into the other Spirit of the Century books. There will be another Khan book, a Sally Slick novel, and an Amelia Stone, at least. I can't remember if there will be more but you can bet they will all find their way into my library, esp if Oliver Wyman continues to read them

Outstanding
Revisado: 01-08-08
I just finished listening to this book and it was amazing. I normally use audio books for doing little chores around the house I have to do or drives but with this story I was looking for things to do just so I could listen to more of it. It was a great story and a great telling.
I am a fan of fairy tales and recognized the strong ties to the Goose Girl tale by the Grimm brothers but I liked the "reality" twist of it with the features and complex situations. There were a few heart-wrenching moments and some of unadulterated joy as this story unraveled. I have strongly recommended this "chick" book to several friends and do not hesitate to recommend it to anyone I don't know as well. :)
