Historia
It's the following Thursday. Elizabeth has received a letter from an old colleague, a man with whom she has a long history. He's made a big mistake, and he needs her help. His story involves stolen diamonds, a violent mobster and a very real threat to his life. As bodies start piling up, Elizabeth enlists Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron in the hunt for a ruthless murderer. And if they find the diamonds, too? Well, wouldn't that be a bonus? But this time, they are up against an enemy who wouldn't bat an eyelid at knocking off four septuagenarians.

All Round Fabulous
Revisado: 01-27-24
I simply adored this book. The quirky, very human characters were totally 3 dimensional and hugely believable, and most of all, so much fun! The narration is unparalleled.
I wish I could rate it higher.

Historia
On a warm July evening in 1985, a middle-aged man stood on the pavement of a busy avenue in the heart of Moscow, holding a plastic carrier bag. In his grey suit and tie, he looked like any other Soviet citizen. The bag alone was mildly conspicuous, printed with the red logo of Safeway, the British supermarket.

Beautiful writing, wonderful storytelling.
Revisado: 11-17-23
I loved everything about this book. The way the story was written and told put you in the room when things were happening. The background to the main story was seamlessly written, so I never lost the sense of where I was up to.
Ben McIntyre's narration has made me a huge fan of both his writing, and his voice, pronunciation and accent were just so right.

Historia
Sir Gareth Ludlow never truly recovered from the death of his fiancée. Years later, a chance encounter with Amanda, a young and devastatingly pretty runaway, inspires him to try to do the right thing and to set her on a path towards a good life. But Sir Gareth has been neck-deep in a life of debauchery and hedonism ever since his fiancée's death, and Amanda's startlingly lively imagination proves to be more than he'd bargained for. As they both become increasingly entangled in Sir Gareth's scheme, it seems more and more difficult for either of them to lead the life they should.

Narrator lets it down.
Revisado: 06-15-23
One of the things I enjoy so very much about English narrators, is their crystal clear and trustworthy pronunciation.
This narrator didn't bother to find out how 18th and 19th century Upper classes pronounced Mama and Papa. It drove me insane. Also, valice being pronounced like chalice.
Georgette Heyer's beautiful conversations were given no gentle nuances.
The book itself is one of my favoured GH, but not this narrator.

Evocative, funny, clever, sad, beautifully read. Such an insight into living through war in an occupied country, and remaining true, beautiful people.

I couldn't finish this. Inane detail on unimportant things, no clear indication of who is who or where you are at any given time, no following up hinted details... I got frustrated at this wandering tale.
