Number one for me are his valuable self reflections & human behavior observations.

Even though this was written 100+ years ago he sights the strifes still challenging humankind today: competition, humbleness, wealth building, the human condition, fairness of wealth and then distribution upon death.

Some of the later chapters are of much less interest to me but his summary at the closing chapter is excellent.

I read everything Robert writes that I can get my hands on. Wise, fair and insightful. His writings on current Germany are fascinating to me since I love Western European history - its behaviors are a repeating theme, unfortunately, but true to itself.

Ron packed this story with extreme information and fairness throughout - an excellent read. I regret not reading it when I was younger, but now had the good fortune of it being read by Grover Gardner, one of the best in the business.
I’ll now view everything Rockefeller differently, more knowingly and appreciatively.

John’s word order, huge vocabulary tells a hard to predict story. His understanding of human feelings and belief is uncanny and telling - I like stories that deepen my sense of expression. It’s a great twisting story and beautifully read; if read by anyone else as much feeling may not have come across, she nails the moods and feelings.

Where Hitler thought he was going long-term is still a mystery to me. Did he or any of his thugs think through the viability and practicality of managing their conquering objectives longterm? Over and over I think to myself what triggered his sense of utter cruelty? And listening to his speeches his reasoning was so flawed, he justified it all through providence, his convenient justification & catch all. You can be sure millions of Germans shook their heads in disbelief but what could they do with epic levels of social control and unyielding intimidation? Not much, buy in or die. And why isn’t more written about Stalin, his sense of collective cruelty paralleled and equaled Hitler’s as we later saw. In many ways the unwise fools that wrote the Versailles Treaty helped put these wheels in motion.

Shirer does a good job of expressing g himself and the circumstances he observes. This the last Shirer audio book there is to listen too, of course read by Grover Gardener (who’s superb). I was crapped out at the end knowing I’ve listened to them all but like his other stories I learned a ton - that’s the safest part - what do I listen to now? Never thought I’d feel sad about finishing but indeed I am.

Typical Shirer, tons of data and thorough detail. The reader isn’t particularly good, a poor choice IMO.

I’ve listened to something like 165+ hours of Shirer’s stories and recaps, what a superb writer and observationalist he was; here I am 71 and known his name all my life but never read a word until maybe 6 years ago, and all fantastically read by Grover Gardner - any other reader would be a disappointment, at least to me. These chilling and matter of fact recounts give way to changing how I think about the dissatisfied times we live it today - but it’s always been this way and suspect it always will be - it’s reassuring to me, and relieving, to know mankind is terminally unsatisfied - at least todays issues really are not unique.

This is the second time I’ve listened to Chickenhawk, I got even more out of this time than the first. His story telling skills are first rate with a strong vocabulary. Listening to the details of flight and his flight controls/methods is impressive, his skills were under appreciated - but so much of the Vietnam era was too. Our country didn’t treat those who served there as they should have, that collective shortsightedness is embarrassing.

Grover Gardner reads Shirers stories extremely well. He’s read so many of his (Shirer’s) I immediately think it’s Shirer himself. The content is of an angle I’ve not heard elsewhere and from a person who lived it firsthand. He was an impressive writer, outspoken but fair.
