Historia
In many ways, we’re more comfortable than ever before. But could our sheltered, temperature-controlled, overfed, underchallenged lives actually be the leading cause of many our most urgent physical and mental health issues? In this gripping investigation, award-winning journalist Michael Easter seeks out off-the-grid visionaries, disruptive genius researchers, and mind-body conditioning trailblazers who are unlocking the life-enhancing secrets of a counterintuitive solution: discomfort.

Enjoyed the interweaving of facts and data and science with story
Revisado: 03-11-25
I’ve listened to books like Outlive by Peter Attia and 21 Miles by Jessica Hepburn and I think this is a mix of both— personal narrative about a very difficult task + science research and practical application for everyday lives. I really enjoyed when it debunked my own thinking and made me question how I live. Great listen!

Historia
1985. Anita de Monte, a rising star in the art world, is found dead in New York City; her tragic death is the talk of the town. Until it isn’t. By 1998 Anita’s name has been all but forgotten—certainly by the time Raquel, a third-year art history student is preparing her final thesis. On College Hill, surrounded by privileged students whose futures are already paved out for them, Raquel feels like an outsider. Students of color, like her, are the minority there, and the pressure to work twice as hard for the same opportunities is no secret.

Ana de Mendieta! Great historical fiction
Revisado: 12-13-24
Really enjoyed this, I was fascinated with Ana de Mendieta’s work as an art school student and didn’t know she was murdered until so long after. Great piece of historical fiction and loved the imagination behind life after death plus the narration was excellent.

Wow!
Revisado: 10-21-24
This author never disappoints, always makes me laugh and cry and the characters always have so much depth. I really appreciated that she returned to the couple and showed the very real difficulties of long distance relationships and figuring out how to make a relationship work.

This was absolutely stunning. My favorite of the series. It really spoke to me personally. Thank you for writing a novel that so lovingly speaks of Lebanon. That gives it such humanity and beauty. Thank you for writing about being an immigrant. About loving your home but not being able to stay. Thank you for writing about love across two cultures.

The first two were better, but still a satisfying end
Revisado: 04-26-23
I read the other two, I was trying to read this one to finish the story but it was just so tedious. The audible version was good, but the story was long. Still cried at the end, of course.

After a decade of trying to become a mother - 11 rounds of unsuccessful IVF, multiple miscarriages and a pregnancy which proved almost fatal - Jessica Hepburn knew it was time to do something different. So she decided to swim the 21 miles across the English Channel - no easy feat, especially for someone with an aversion to exercise who couldn't swim very well.

Beautiful and inspiring, helpful
Revisado: 04-10-23
This book is about so much more than motherhood or even swimming the English Channel. It’s about hopes and various types of grief and what is a fulfilling and more. The story was beautifully written and I liked that the author was the narrator, it felt so candid. I’ve also been wondering about whether or not I want children, and if I have them, can I still change the world? This book helped me on my path to finding the answer to those questions and I’m extremely grateful.

Incredible narration and great story
Revisado: 12-23-21
I’ve listened to hundreds of titles and this was the best narration I’ve ever heard. The story was also unexpected and excellent, I’ve also listened and read many rom coms and finding something surprising these days is difficult — but this surprises and delights. Can’t recommend enough.

Good, but a bit tough to get through
Revisado: 12-18-21
Overall the story had a good message and the ancillary and familiar characters were so incredibly lovable, but the main character was just tough connect with… though at times I saw myself in him. Not always a fun/pleasant read due to the inner dialogue of the main character, but in the end it had a good message and a lovely ending.
