Best of this series?
Revisado: 10-22-24
I really enjoyed the twists and turns of this story; of the binds that the characters found themselves in, and how they got themselves out of them.
The end seemed a little rushed, particularly as to what happened to the people who beat up Rothman. I was hoping that he would turn out to be an imposter, and that Lord Cox would retain his title and lands.
However, keeping everything in the family in the end was satisfying. Except the coronet.

Spellbinding - as in "Magic"
Revisado: 06-25-24
These stories really held my interest.
I sometimes had trouble following all the clues, but that may have been due to listening instead of reading.
The characters were well developed. The romance was somewhat predictable, but everything I thought it was moving forward, there would be another obstacle. I do hope that Miss Glass gets over her British classism and comes to accept India as her social equal.
The author made the magic believable, as were the workings of the Guilds.
I look forward to reading the next book. I have already listened to most of the Glass Library series.
I wish these books had been offered in the chronological order of the timeline of the stories.
That is the main reason that I threw in a 4-starfor "story".
It certainly ended with a surprise that left me hanging.

Historia
Feisty, passionate Beatrice Steele has never fit the definition of a true lady, according to the strict code of conduct that reigns in Swampshire, her small English township—she is terrible at needlework, has absolutely no musical ability, and her artwork is so bad it frightens people. Nevertheless, she lives a perfectly agreeable life with her marriage-scheming mother, prankster father, and two younger sisters— beautiful Louisa and forgettable Mary. But she harbors a dark secret: She is obsessed with the true crime cases she reads about in the newspaper.

Historia
It is the early spring of 2016 and Queen Elizabeth is at Windsor Castle in advance of her 90th birthday celebrations. But the preparations are interrupted when a guest is found dead in one of the Castle bedrooms. The scene suggests the young Russian pianist strangled himself, but a badly tied knot leads MI5 to suspect foul play was involved. The Queen leaves the investigation to the professionals—until their suspicions point them in the wrong direction. Unhappy at the mishandling of the case and concerned for her staff's morale, the monarch decides to take matters into her own hands.

I couldn't stop listening. It was well narrated and well plotted.
I felt like the portrayal of the queen was genuine.
There was the place where the Obama presidency was placed at the same time of the 2020 Olympics, but was a minor distraction.

Historia
Like many well-to-do Upper East Siders over the age of 65, esteemed art appraiser Percival Skinner had planned to spend his retirement living off his savings. But a market correction has left him living below his prior means. One day he’s visited by a dapper fixer in search of a famous work by a Renaissance master. Skinner knows the work well: The original was owned by his ancestor, and was passed down through his family over the generations. If, as an intermediary, he can coordinate a sale, a small fortune awaits. Problem is, he might not be the only one on the make.

From thereon I did not stop listening until the end.
the characters and places were well-drawn for a short story.
the narration was very good, except for one inflection that might be caught by unexpectedly.

Nothing could be more enchanting than a summer wedding - or two! - in Charleston's fabled Lowcountry. A centuries-old church, an avenue of ancient oaks dripping moss, a storied ballroom, a sand dune at sunset.... Yet when a stranger arrives, a long-held family secret could silence the bells ringing for the Muir sisters. Scandals surface, family bonds are questioned, and promises are broken and renewed.

More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

Fascinating
Revisado: 05-26-21
Finally listened to The Handmaid's Tale, feeling that I should do so before listening to this. Turns out I would have been pretty much lost without having heard it first.
Note: I have never seen the TV series of the same name.
Started listening to this book and had to stop to read another book.
Returned to it about 3 weeks later, wondering whether I should finish it.
I'm glad that I did.
While it was sometimes difficult to keep the characters straight without having a written copy available, I managed, and was feeling very sympathetic to Becca, Agnes, Nicole and Aunt Lydia at the end.
I would really like to know the parents of these people and Aunt Lydia's connection to them.
A third book?

Fascinating
Revisado: 04-15-21
I have avoided reading thisbook until now. I guess thar I had to be 81 years old to appreciate it. I listened to it on Audible, and I thnk that held my interest and kept me from stopping at times.
The presience of this book makes me shudder. It does make me feel that I almost always have to be on guard to keep it or something similar from happening.
Claire Danes is an excellent reader who brought characters alive and kept them straight for me.
