Historia
For many, the name Jimi Hendrix conjures up a larger-than-life image of the man who set fire to guitars, women's hearts, and the status quo. In this groundbreaking account, music journalist Charles R. Cross takes a far deeper look. Beyond Hendrix's legendary onstage and offstage magnetism, and his excessive lifestyle, was a man who struggled to accept his role as an idol and privately craved the kind of normal family life he never had.

Shocking that his fame lasted only 4 years of his life. It would appear sex, drugs, and rock and roll is over rated

Impressive discussion of meaning assigned to beauty and aging
Revisado: 08-08-22
A series of well developed relatable characters are offered and it was particularly rich with Justine performing. She is shockingly talented though she credits a team at the end.

Historia
Set on the Minnesota prairies in 1987, during a drought season that is fostering the demise of the family farms, the story features two intertwining narrators: a father searching for answers after his son commits a heinous murder, and a pastor's wife who has returned to the town for mysterious reasons of her own. A penetrating look at small-town America, reminiscent of Russell Banks' Sweet Hereafter or Affliction, driven by a powerful murder mystery, Little Wolves is a literary triumph.

Pleasant story with some twists
Revisado: 09-07-21
Easy to listen to though left me guessing what was around the next bend. War and class struggles form the main obstacles of the story. It also reminded how recently women’s work environments were so insulting.

History that was new to me
Revisado: 03-23-21
I enjoyed hearing about Medora ND in TR’s day as well as his courtships and early turn of events leading to office. Sounds like nothing has really changed with respect to politics. In places there was more detail than my interest could support but 1.3x served me well.

History professors take another run at telling stories we all think we know. They do a nice job of getting to the point and describing forces of the day that supported victory.

Historia
Following her retirement from Princeton University, celebrated historian Dr. Nell Irvin Painter surprised everyone in her life by returning to school - in her 60s - to earn a BFA and MFA in painting. In Old in Art School, she travels from her beloved Newark to the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design; finds meaning in the artists she loves, even as she comes to understand how they may be undervalued; and struggles with the unstable balance between the pursuit of art and the inevitable, sometimes painful, demands of a life fully lived.

Many relevant experiences conveyed
Revisado: 12-20-20
I am stunned by how much intelligence and skill reside in this one person. The book gets into too much detail on media and artistic process for me. I appreciated the experiences around ageism, caring for parents, changing focus after having extensive success in another area and perceptions of race from a different vantage than my own.

Kind of jabbers
Revisado: 12-04-20
This was short and kind of didn’t go anywhere. It was kind of a realistic blow by blow of any old day for many of us.....slightly different stressors but expected more. Read in prep for the Prayer Box so maybe it will mean more with additional context.
