As with the first two parts of this "trilogy", it's not. It's just the ending thrid of a 16hr book. The story was a little better, it kept me on the edge of my seat a little, the female narrator's male dialog was still very jarring.

While I won't be rushing to pick up any more books by this author, I won't be avoiding them either.

As I stated in the review for the first book (Savage Hunger) this book is not the 2nd in a trilogy, but the middle third of a book. And the narration issues are the same as well (the female narrator's male dialog is very dissident with the male narrator).

The only reason I picked up this book, rather than give up on the story after the first one, was because it was part of the Escape package. I would not have been happy if I had paid for it.

First, this is not the first in a trilogy, it's the first third of a book. Which is fine if you pick it up as part of the Escape package, not so much if you use a credit.

Second, the narration of this book is why I dislike dual narrators. When the female narrator especially reads the male dialog it is very jarring as it sounds nothing like the male narrator.

I liked the story and will be looking for more by this author.

However, the editing was terrible. Multiple times sentence parts are repeated, and at one point the narrator clears her throat loudly and restarts her sentence! Did no one in post-production listen to this book?

I rarely read a series one book after the other, but I have with this one. I was waiting none too patiently for this book.

Unfortunately, they changed the reader and I can't even get through the prolog. I can get over the change in Dale's voice, but the sound of Cal as a bad Doug and Bob McKenzie impersonation was just too much for me.

I will be returning the audiobook and just reading it. Such a disappointment.

While creepy at times, it was a good read. It has also left me thinking differently about a lot of things, from allergies to depression. For instance, could a change in the microbiome be the reason people who cut this or that out of their diet for an extend period of time feel ill if they eat it?

Over all the story was okay, but the reader totally threwt. She makes Aribelle sound whiny and clingy by ending each sentence on a high note. And her voice for Thaddeus is grating.I had a hard time finishing the book, even at just over 5 hours.

I just couldn’t get into the story. The dialog is to clunky and the characters don’t ring true. The male POV read too much like a girl’s ideal to be believable for me.

Top Notch Book Read Perfectly

I love the Dresden Files. I have read over half of them at this point, and am indulging myself by reading them again. They more than hold up. The twisting plot, including many bad guys, keeps Dresden and the reader on their toes, but never leaves us struggling to keep up.

I love the fact that while Dresden feels overwhelmed at times, and is never simply strolling through the problems with ease, it doesn’t feel like he’s simply at the whims of fate, needing an outside force to save him at the last moment, or always just reacting, with no real ability to affect the outcome. Granted, he normally makes this worse for himself.

With the wonderful reading adding to the immersive effect of the stories and world Butcher is creating, this is a book I recommend to everyone. Fantasy fan or not, detective novel fan or not, everyone should listen to this book.

The Beginning of a Wonderful Series

Harry Dresden is the only Wizard in the phone book. As a consultant for Chicago PD's Special Investigation unit, Harry is called into on a case where a mobster and his girlfriend have had their harts explode in their chests. With thunderstorms rolling over the city, Harry has to balance the police case, other case to try and bring in rent money, and the attentions of a reporter.

The book, as with all the books in the Dresden Files series, are first person. While I’m normally not a fan of this stile, it really works here. Especially being read by Marsters. The quips and witty comments, like the ones used when relating a story to friends, created an intimacy that I find I have a hard time achieving with other first person narratives.

Full of laugh out loud moments, the story is well woven, with just the right amount of foreshadowing and bring back of little details that seemed innocuous but really do mean something. It’s a perfect blend of fantasy and hardboiled detective stories. I love the characters, especially Bob and Mister, and was enthralled in the book to the very end. The world is wonderfully intricate and well developed, especially as the series continues.
