Historia
Thousands of years ago, Earth's terraforming program took to the stars. On the world they called Nod, scientists discovered alien life - but it was their mission to overwrite it with the memory of Earth. Then humanity's great empire fell, and the program's decisions were lost to time. Aeons later, humanity and its new spider allies detected fragmentary radio signals between the stars. They dispatched an exploration vessel, hoping to find cousins from old Earth. But those ancient terraformers woke something on Nod better left undisturbed. And it's been waiting for them.

Phenomenal Follow-up to a phenomenal sci-fi epic
Revisado: 07-18-23
I loved Children of Time (the first book in this series), so I immediately bought this book after finishing it, and boy was I not disappointed! Adrien has done a fantastic job of showing and telling a realistic story about life in outer space, the true potential diversity of alien life, and the massive amount of effort it can take to communicate inter-specially - all while staying well within the currently understood bounds of physics, biology and neuropsychology. If you’re as big a science and linguistics nerd as I am, this is a must read! Cannot recommend this series as a whole highly enough.

One of the unknown stories from the Cold War
Revisado: 03-11-22
I had a hard time putting this down. I found extra things to do so I could keep listening. As the author says, "The timeline is condensed, " but this does not take away from the story. This a good reminder of the good people in the world who do good because it's right despite their fears and not because they will get credit for what they do.

Historia
This sharp and engaging collection of essays by leading governmental scholar Cass R. Sunstein examines shifting understandings of what's normal and how those shifts account for the feminist movement, the civil rights movement, the rise of Adolf Hitler, the rise of gun rights, the response to COVID-19, and changing understandings of liberty. Prevailing norms include the principle of equal dignity, the idea of not treating the press as an enemy of the people, and the social unacceptability of open expressions of racial discrimination.

This was a fun origin story for fans of Gillian Gallagher and the school she founded. I wished it were longer, but nonetheless it was satisfactory to see our favorite characters bond.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

A tale of human conquest of one's self
Revisado: 10-24-20
This was a fairly comprehensive biography of Grant that dispelled the aura of cronyism that Grant's legacy left and showed a how a man may overcome alcoholism and be loyal to a fault and detriment of many. The author also made a case for his greatness as one who championed the rights of a once enslaved people to enfranchisement and wiping out the first Ku Klux Klan. Grant was beloved by the Union soldiers and later by the former Confederate soldiers, the mark of true greatness.

Historia
In this important new biography, Ronald C. White, Jr. offers a fresh and fascinating definition of Lincoln as a man of integrity - what today's commentators are calling "authenticity" - whose internal moral compass is the key to understanding his life. Through meticulous research, utilizing recently discovered Lincoln letters, legal papers, and photographs, White depicts Lincoln as a person of intellectual curiosity, comfortable with ambiguity, and capable of changing his mind.

A Complete Biography
Revisado: 08-18-20
This book met all my requirements in a presidential biography. That is certainly easier to achieve with some presidents than others because of the information available to write about. Abraham Lincoln's life is better recorded than most because many people researched his early life through interviewing those who knew him. Ron White creates an intriguing narrative of his early life and professions which contributed to the man that voters saw and chose as their president.

Historia
When Abraham Lincoln was assassinated and Vice-President Andrew Johnson became "the Accidental President", it was a dangerous time in America. Devastated by war and resorting to violence, many white Southerners hoped to restore a pre-Civil War society, if without slavery, and the pugnacious Andrew Johnson seemed to share their goals. With profound insights and making use of extensive research, Brenda Wineapple dramatically evokes this pivotal period in American history, when the country was rocked by the first-ever impeachment of a sitting American president.

What a cast of characters!
Revisado: 08-14-20
I read this as my biography about Andrew Johnson, as there are not a lot of available choices. In addition to the story of this period in his life, I was rewarded with the stories of the many people who took part in the politics of the day. I have thought that Andrew Johnson may have been a man of integrity, but was loyal to the wrong ideas.
I expected some references to other impeachments, but those were only mentioned in the concluding chapter. I really loved the concluding premise of the role this impeachment played in the solidifying of our nation.
Gabra Zackman did a marvelous job.
