A captivating story! I could not put it down, reading it in just 3 days. Mitch Albom weaves together the tales of four lives with TRUTH. What a time to release it as more and more lies from leaders all over the world are being acknowledged as untruths. This novel is indeed It a metaphor for our time. Truth be told.

In the spring of 1942, young Elzbieta Rabinek is aware of the swiftly growing discord just beyond the courtyard of her comfortable Warsaw home. She knows all too well about German brutality - and that it's the reason she must conceal her true identity. But in befriending Sara, Elzbieta makes a discovery that propels her into a dangerous world of deception and heroism.

Biography of a Powerful 18th-century Woman
Revisado: 05-25-21
As a reader of historical fiction, I found this book a little tedious at times. However, it was worth reading to the end as the last chapter was the one I got the most out of. Great descriptions of the goings-on at Chatsworth House which I have visited. The last chapter is the best unbiased discussion of the status of women that I have ever read.

Historia
A definitive, deeply moving narrative, Bonhoeffer is a story of moral courage in the face of the monstrous evil that was Nazism. After discovering the fire of true faith in a Harlem church, Bonhoeffer returned to Germany and became one of the first to speak out against Hitler. As a double agent, he joined the plot to assassinate the Führer and was hanged in Flossenbürg concentration camp at age thirty-nine. Since his death, Bonhoeffer has grown to be one of the most fascinating, complex figures of the twentieth century.

A Must Read Book for Our Time
Revisado: 02-18-21
Anyone concerned about the loss of freedom has to read this book. There are many parallels with the world of WW II Germany and the world today. The frail, the elderly and the disabled were put in special hospitals and systematically killed. Bonhoeffer was arrested on suspicion of financial crimes and jailed for years while the Nazis searched the homes of his friends and family until they came up with evidence against him. The official church went along with it. Very few people spoke out until it was too late.

Great Storyteller
Revisado: 01-19-21
This is a most unusual topic, but I read it after I listened to the sample. Simon Winchester is one of the best storytellers I have run into. He could probably make watching paint drying exciting. This book is about things we all have and do: watches, cars, flying and measuring. But he adds little details that make you come back for more.

About 140,000 Jews were in Holland as WWII began. Only 38,000 survived! Story gets you thinking. Why are we talking about every minority except the Jews when their persecution is so close in history that the world is still prosecuting?
Also, this book is a modern 1984, showing how a totalitarian regime works.

Historia
Two decades after the publication of The Black Book of Communism, nearly everyone is or at least should be aware of the immense evil produced by that devilish ideology first hatched when Karl Marx penned his Communist Manifesto two centuries ago. Far too many people, however, separate Marx the man from the evils wrought by the oppressive ideology and theory that bears his name.

The worst idea in history is back! Communism has wrecked national economies, enslaved whole peoples, and killed more than a hundred million men and women. What's not to like? Too many young Americans are supporting communism. Millennials prefer socialism to capitalism, and 25 percent have a positive view of Lenin. One in four Americans believe that George W. Bush killed more people than Joseph Stalin. And 69 percent of millennials would vote for a socialist for president. They ought to know better.
