strong start. quickly devolved.
Revisado: 01-29-22
Interesting start w/good characters, interesting sub plot about film documentary. Soon fell apart with repeat references to main characters weight, appearance, lingerie. By the time the crime bit appears, the main characters have become a trope.

Historia
Based on nearly 10 years of research in Italy, France, and Israel, including interviews with Gino Bartali's family, former teammates, a Holocaust survivor Bartali saved, and many others, Road to Valor is the first book ever written about the Italian cycling legend in English and the only book written in any language to fully explore the scope of Bartali's wartime work. An epic tale of courage, comeback, and redemption, it is the untold story of one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century.

I loved this book. The story was a bit uneven, but the historic detail and stories of the cycling greats made it a fantastic listen.

Interesting telling of an interesting life
Revisado: 02-03-21
Megan Rapinoe does a great job telling her story, keeping it interesting, and insightful. Stories about her family and youth through world cup and her evolving politics. A genuinely intelligent person, thinking about the world around her ... we can use some of that.

Mawkish, waayyyyy too long
Revisado: 07-07-20
The story began in an intriguing way, the set-up and charactors interesting. Not too far into the story, the father's narrative about his daughter became cloying, sounding more like a teenager romanticising over a crush than a parent talking about a child.
As the story dragged on and on and on it became increasingly improbable. By chapter 20 it was completely unbeleivable, the characters seemed false, and the writer's effort to draw the story out minute by minute became a tedious excercise and killed off any emotional impact.
Rarely do I give up on any story / book, but I just couldn't listen for one more minute.

narration so bad I had to stop listening
Revisado: 08-16-19
I've loved the Chee and Leaphorn stories, a great commute read and listen. The narrator ruined this tale, the young women sounded vacuous and Chee had an accent like a Yiddish speaker. Some of it was so nad I had to laugh out loud.

Historia
For a time, Nelson Algren was America's most famous author, lauded by the likes of Richard Wright and Ernest Hemingway. Millions bought his books. Algren's third novel, The Man with the Golden Arm, won the first National Book Award, and Frank Sinatra starred in the movie. But despite Algren's talent, he abandoned fiction and fell into obscurity. The cause of his decline was never clear. Some said he drank his talent away; others cited writer's block. The truth, hidden in the pages of his books, is far more complicated and tragic.

Deeply researched engaging story
Revisado: 08-03-19
If you like biographies, depression stories and history brought to life via Audible, you will love this tale. Nelson Algren is a singular talent, as a writer, as a listener, as a teller-of-tales. Algrens story is brought to life in this telling. If White City caught your imagination, you'll love this. If you are engaged as a reader of intelligent critique and history, you'll love this.

Started out a good story .... then went downhill.
Revisado: 01-28-19
Was looking for an engaging mystery for commute listening. The story began well, interesting characters and intertwined situations. For the first 60% of the book it moved forward, deepening the tale and personalities. Unfortunately, by 3/4 of the way through the author seemed to get bored with telling a detailed story and it turned into a drag of one beating / accident / gunplay / fire / tornado ( not really a tornado ) to the next. It felt like a jumbled attempt to fill chapters. If the story had ended three quarters of the way through it would have been very entertaining.

Historia
Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first Lo's stay is nothing but pleasant: The cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, and gray skies fall.

the narration was good, and the only thing, along with a very length slog through an office day that kept me listening. the story was good as well but the main character was a whiney pathetic mess.
