Historia
Ten years have passed on Tines World, where Ravna Bergnsdot and a number of human children ended up after a disaster that nearly obliterated humankind throughout the galaxy. Ravna and the pack animals for which the planet is named have survived a war, and Ravna has saved more than one hundred children who were in cold-sleep aboard the vessel that brought them. While there is peace among the Tines, there are those among them - and among the humans - who seek power. And no matter the cost, these malcontents are determined to overturn the fledgling civilization....

Just underwhelming
Revisado: 06-27-23
I really enjoyed the other two books in this series, and was excited to try the third. However I'm disappointed to say that this one is really only a win for those who are invested in Book 1's characters and their stories. The deep think-ey scifi aspects I love about the author/other books are missing and really made this an unrewarding read. I finished it, but can't say I enjoyed it much.

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

the longer the better, and this is better
Revisado: 05-20-21
I wanted something even heavier after enjoying Mistborn trilogy and was no disappointed. Deep, thoughtful and nuanced (and long enough to be worth 3-4 Audible credits!).
I'd rather have only one narrator - both of them here are great, but it's jarring for me when they switch. Zero other complaints. I'm on to the next book straight away.

Historia
For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

An outstanding combination of fantasy elements
Revisado: 01-08-21
Truth is, I picked this book cuz it was on sale and long.
What luck to have stumbled onto something that combines deep and careful world building and history, a fully developed magic system, politics, genuinely sympathetic characters, and some relatively cool action.
The narration is outstanding, the writing is great, and the plot moves along really nicely. Surely recommended.

sophisticated concepts worth pushing through for

The world building here is great. the characters, dialog, and style of exposition feels amateur-ish, but it's worth pushing through if you like big concepts .

From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

Historia
Korede is bitter. How could she not be? Her sister, Ayoola, is many things: the favorite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola’s third boyfriend in a row is dead. Korede’s practicality is the sisters’ saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood, the trunk of her car is big enough for a body, and she keeps Ayoola from posting pictures of her dinner to Instagram when she should be mourning her “missing” boyfriend. Not that she gets any credit. Korede has long been in love with a kind, handsome doctor at the hospital where she works.

Great book! Fun read
Revisado: 12-30-19
This book went fast, and I was glad I had it on audiobook. The narrator had a wonderful voice and presentation and I felt it gave an extra dimension to the story to hear the words and names pronounced in a native tongue.
As far as the story, I loved it. I thought the premise, characters, and development were all interesting. The relationship between the sisters was beautifully written. Complex enough that it is worth a discussion but easy enough for a beach read. My favorite kind of book! Great book club read, too. I highly recommend it!!

Historia
Our world today - from the phone in your pocket to the car that you drive, the allure of social media to the strategy of the Pentagon - has been shaped irrevocably by the technology of silicon transistors. Year after year, for half a century, these tiny switches have enabled ever-more startling capabilities. Their incredible proliferation has altered the course of human history as dramatically as any political or social revolution. At the heart of it all has been one quiet Californian: Gordon Moore.

a great and untold story
Revisado: 06-07-19
Moore gets comparatively little lip service and it allows the world if technology to overlook the role of determination and consistency, along with chemistry in the history of computers. Those seem like unsexy concepts in the world of innovation and quantum computing, but the fundamentals and commitment to social-consensus that Moore's law was fueled by is well-highlighted here.
dry but worthwhile.

surprisingly insightful and plain for a biz exec
Revisado: 04-23-19
I was interested in hearing the details of how IBM fell so hard and how it turned around, but expected a more emotional and romantic telling if the story. Gerstner's approach is instead somewhat dry (most of the time) in a good way, and he painted a decent picture of a turnaround driven by sweat and focus, rather than inspiration.
