Historia
How to Be Less Stupid About Race is your essential guide to breaking through the half truths and ridiculous misconceptions that have thoroughly corrupted the way race is represented in the classroom, pop culture, media, and politics. Centuries after our nation was founded on genocide, settler colonialism, and slavery, many Americans are kinda-sorta-maybe waking up to the reality that our racial politics are (still) garbage. But in the midst of this reckoning, widespread denial and misunderstandings about race persist.

Best of the how to understand and change series of books I've read. A call to moving forward progressive rights for the disenfranchised and a frank ask that we take social responsibility collectively to eradicate racism.

Historia
For thousands of years, there has been a cycle: a Demon King rises and conquers, and a Hero is reborn a hundred years later to defeat him. Each time, civilizations are ground to dust beneath the Demon King's hordes, but humanity has remained secure in the belief that a Hero of legend will always save them. There's just one slight problem. It's only been 23 years since the Demon King's latest rise, and this time, he's already conquered more than half the world. If humanity simply waits for the Hero's return, there may be no world left for him to save.

lighthearted but not my cup of tea
Revisado: 11-06-20
the story borrows heavily from The legend of Zelda and it mixes in other tropes from each of the titles in the series. it's fast-paced short and well read, but there is a lot of eye-winking at the reader who is familiar with the foundation of the story that can get a little tiring.
overall fun, wish it were an actual title in the series.

A fact filled perspective on justice inequality
Revisado: 08-16-20
This should be required reading for anybody trying to understand inequality in the justice system as it pertains to America's focus on drug war and other crime deterring policies that have a disproportionate negative effect on black and brown Americans.
The final chapter of the book especially punctuates the deficiencies in both of our major political groups, to correct these harmful policies.

Historia
One of the most acclaimed books of our time - the definitive Vietnam War exposé and the winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. When he came to Vietnam in 1962, Lieutenant Colonel John Paul Vann was the one clear-sighted participant in an enterprise riddled with arrogance and self-deception, a charismatic soldier who put his life and career on the line in an attempt to convince his superiors that the war should be fought another way. By the time he died in 1972, Vann had embraced the follies he once decried. He died believing that the war had been won.

A very personal history of war
Revisado: 03-31-20
This book is awash in personal stories about Paul Van. his very mature seems to be one of eccentricity, intelligence, and a ghost he is chasing thought his career. His work ethic so enviable, and yet his personal vice so morally bankrupt.

Historia
Why is America living in an age of profound economic inequality? Why, despite the desperate need to address climate change, have even modest environmental efforts been defeated again and again? Why have protections for employees been decimated? Why do hedge-fund billionaires pay a far lower tax rate than middle-class workers? The conventional answer is that a popular uprising against "big government" led to the rise of a broad-based conservative movement.

Revisado: 09-20-19
Many people I know have spat back talking points from Cato institute and other forms of disinformation clearly generated by the group mentioned in Jane Mayer's book.
The notion that a group of billionaires have literally change the way Americans perceive problems and solutions to those problems, seems in and of itself a huge tragedy.
Any politician work their salt needs to have comprehensive campaign finance reform as Job 1.

Historia
For much of his life, historian Howard Zinn chronicled American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version taught in schools - with its emphasis on great men in high places - to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of - and in the words of - America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.

Matt Damon wasn't wrong
Revisado: 06-20-19
It knocked me on my ass...at least at first. Mr Zinn does a good job of laying bare all of his biases upfront and at the end of the book. He doesn't speak with any pretence other than the goal of communicating the imbalance of power that he observes historically in the United States.
If you're looking for a deeply patriotic history of the United States and how it has benefited its citizens and improve lives through capitalism and other structures that we use, you won't find that cherry image of Americana here. However what you will find near the end of the book is a message of Hope and resistance to keep pushing our country forward to drive for what we see is best. To adapt to the new changes that we are experiencing and to be the new nimble country that perhaps our forebears had in mind when they wrote the Constitution.
