Well, damn. If you’re going to drag readers through 80% of the novel before any real action happens, warn us if it ends on a major cliffhanger, will ya?

The best part of this book was definitely the title. I was really hoping this book would make me laugh. Alas, I was mistaken.

Well-behaved women rarely make history

As historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich famously said, “Well-behaved women rarely make history.” The Ballad of Martha has received a breath of new life since the biography and documentary “A Midwife’s Tale” took the American history and Women’s Studies departments by storm.

While the author makes no bones (or apologies) about this being a work of fiction, INSPIRED BY the real midwife, I found it no less fascinating. In actuality, it is the storytelling elements of history that drew me into the field in the first place - what happened? To whom? WHY? She does a beautiful job crafting a narrative I was compelled to return to again and again.

“Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale
a tale of a fateful trip,
that started from this tropic port,
aboard this tiny ship…”

The MC was a fishy sailin' man,
not so brave or sure,
12 passengers set sail that day,
for a 12 day deadly tour,
a 12 day deadly tour.

The circumstances started getting rough,
the tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the courage of three fearful crew
the plot would be lost.
The plot would be lost.

The ship aground on the shore of this uncharted narrative device
with Grasshopper,
the Tortoise too.
A Dragon and her shield,
a Monk to guide,
the Spider and Elephant,
here on The Blessed’s Isle.

On top of what, exactly?

The question is - on top of what, exactly? I wouldn’t say any of these characters were living their best lives. Not leaning in so much as leaning over, contorting themselves to society’s expectations and prioritizing men’s wishes - with said pressures and expectations internalized and reactions to such driving many life decisions.

People are complicated, and the writing reflects that. But I wouldn’t call this an uplifting read.

Flame flickered out a few times, but rekindled

When I finished FOURTH WING, the cliffhanger had me rushing to purchase IRON FLAME (the waiting list at the library was 3+ months long and I couldn’t wait). However, the flame of interest which burned so brightly at the beginning flickered out a few times (I’d put down the book for weeks / months at a time, only to forget what was happening and force a re-read of several sections). Eventually it was rekindled, and I intend to read the next in the series … when I get around to it :)

The story begins trodding over familiar territory to Kate Quinn fans: code-breaking during WWII. But soon we diverge from THE ROSE CODE with an interesting twist on time travel, jumping 80 years to a ship transmitting distress in 2023. That’s where the story really picks up…I was sorry to see it end.

If I ever make my way to England, Bletchley Park remains high on my list of places to visit.

A re-telling like none other

Revisado: 10-08-24

This novel is not a simple re-telling of a classic from a different point of view. Its very foundation has seismically shifted and then systematically re-built, brick by brick.

JAMES isn’t just about slavery and “passing” and the concept of race. It isn’t merely about family and power - who has it, who wants it, who can claim it for themselves- and revenge. To say it’s primarily about language and code-switching is to present the most abridged version of the narrative. It’s about all these things, and so much more… it’s going to take a while to fully digest, and longer to mentally put down the book.

Missing an essential ingredient in this recipe. It’s as if all the anger and complicated family history and strong emotions of the first story were blanched, leaving the reader with a starchy white rice rather than the rich multi-grain variety we were hoping for.
