Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Brilliant
Revisado: 09-21-23
This is actually my second listen to this book. It is brilliant. It is far from a happy book, but it is also not depressing. At times I laughed out loud and a few times I wept. At times I wanted to punch something. This is not a neutral book. The main character is stoic, but focused. Her choices seemed to make her more vulnerable, but her determination to proceed drove her on. It was the perfect book.

Historia
Ellen leaves Manhattan and her Kennedy-esque fiance for Beacon, Maine. What should be a one-day trip is quickly complicated when she almost drowns in the chilly bay and is saved by a local carpenter. The rescue turns Ellen into something of a local celebrity, which may or may not help her unravel the past her grandmother labored to keep hidden. As she learns about her grandmother and herself, it becomes clear that a 24-hour visit to Beacon may never be enough.

hard to explain
Revisado: 03-12-23
There were great things about this book, and stuff that just grated. I longed for more information about her grandmother, which was my favorite part of the book. I found the narrator a bit jarring. Her choices led her in one direction until she visits her grandmother's home town and she suddenly changes? I think it could have been a more graceful change. And a woman lawyer gives up her work to bake? again, to much change too fast. But the writing is good. The editor could have been better.

Perhaps Her/His best book yet. I use both genders because we all know she publishes under a man's name in this series. Here we have the online world displayed warts and all. Terrorists, misogyny, pedophiles kand homicidal lunatics hiding behind various online nom de plumes are exposed. In the midst of this are a variety of other cases which, though not equally addressed, are more than passing moments in the book. Well written as always and well performed, again, as always.

But at 22, he discovered his whole world was an elaborate illusion, and when Devlin publicly called his family to account for it, he was exiled as a traitor. So be it. Nobody does it better
Revisado: 07-16-22
Mary Balogh is an immediate must buy for me and has been for over a decade. This book is one reason why. She never shies away from difficult topics and sets them in a far more realistic Regency setting than most of her contemporaries. I look forward to what she does with the rest of this family in the future.

It was made into a play, a Broadway as well as a Hollywood musical, and a fabulous movie starring Rosalind Russell.
