Historia
The time is 1975. The place is an unnamed city by the sea. The government has just declared a State of Emergency, in whose upheavals four strangers—a spirited widow, a young student uprooted from his idyllic hill station, and two tailors who have fled the caste violence of their native village—will be thrust together, forced to share one cramped apartment and an uncertain future.

Wonderfully written and narrated story of life, love, loss and heartbreak. It’s not an ‘easy’ read but it’s one you don’t want to end. The characters and the story will stay with you for a long time.

Historia
We are in a small room with the vampire, face to face, as he speaks--as he pours out the hypnotic, shocking, moving, and erotically charged confessions of his first two hundred years as one of the living dead. . . He speaks quietly, plainly, even gently . . . carrying us back to the night when he departed human existence as heir--young, romantic, cultivated--to a great Louisiana plantation, and was inducted by the radiant and sinister Lestat into the other, the "endless," life....

Left a LOT to be desired. Save your credit. Spoiler free
Revisado: 02-14-23
Let me start by saying I truly enjoy being immersed in long novels and have a fondness for the dark and twisted. This book was just unnecessarily long, dreary and excessively repetitive. It’s atmospheric and beautiful written, but there is little to no character development and you never truly care for any of the main characters - though from time to time there’s a spark with one of the humans… none of whom exist for more than a moment or two.
This book is exactly what the title implies; an interview with a vampire who does not want to be… and his centuries long questions about the meaning of life… It is not a riveting tale of love, loss and violence.
Had it not been for the excellent narration I would’ve exited early on. Unfortunately the completionist in me dragged me through with the hopes things would improve. By the last hour of the book I really considered just throwing in the towel, because even after all those hours, I was left feeling nothing and didn’t care about the characters fates. I forced myself to finish… and this is the only ‘spoiler’ I’ll provide - the ending is abrupt but not a cliff hanger, instead a direct lead in to the next book. Which I’ll NOT be listening to unless it’s provided by scrib and doesn’t cost me a credit.

Almost, but not quite
Revisado: 02-02-23
If this were one of audibles included reads I’d likely continue the series bc I throughly enjoyed the narrator and the story itself was ok. However, the plot line and writing quality just aren’t enough for me to spend credits.
The story is ok; not bad, not great. There are a few too many cliches, plot holes and implausibilities combined with a female author writing abt a male DI…

Georgeanna “Georgey” Woolsey isn’t meant for the world of lavish parties and the demure attitudes of women of her stature. So when war ignites the nation, Georgey follows her passion for nursing during a time when doctors considered women on the battlefront a bother. In proving them wrong, she and her sister Eliza venture from New York to Washington, DC, to Gettysburg and witness the unparalleled horrors of slavery as they become involved in the war effort.

Worth the listen
Revisado: 08-30-22
I throughly enjoyed the way this story was told through multiple prospectives and with multiple narrators. Nearly all the characters are rich and well developed. The fact that many of the characters are based upon actual letters and histories enriches the story that much more.
The only negatives are how heavily feminized things lean (not surprising, given the title but it’s laid on thick, particularly with Georgy) and the 4-600xs (without exaggeration) the author uses the term ‘step, steps, stepped to’. How that term made it past an editor is insane.
I never warmed to George’s narrator, her approach was a bit too upbeat and saccharin
given the material.. it made Georgy’s character come across as entitled, preachy and almost condescending.
Jemma and Ann May were both perfect.
The stories are long but rich, only losing their footing in a few places - if anything a bit more detail would have been preferred vs rushing through things.

Historia
Hugh Quarshie reads the extraordinary autobiography of Solomon Northup. His harrowing true story, first published in 1853, was a key factor in the national debate over slavery prior to the American Civil War, significantly changing public opinion on the topic of abolition. It tells the horrifying tale of Solomon Northup, an educated, free black man living with his wife and children in New York State, whose life takes an appalling turn when he is kidnapped, drugged and sold into slavery.

Perhaps a better read than listen…
Revisado: 08-14-22
Excellent but removed narration… which made it hard to fully engage in the telling of Solomon northups’ journal… particularly since a lot of it goes into very minute detail of daily life/tasks. It’s truly more a daily account of life as a slave vs his actual story if that makes sense. It’s a brutal account and I feel I would have been impacted more if my full focus has been held - which is why I feel it should be read vs listened to. I plan to watch the film in hopes of connecting more fully with Solomon’s experiences.

Historia
Retired Cambridge professor Donald Aitcheson loves scouring antiquarian bookshops for secondhand treasures - as much as he loathes the scribbled marginalia from their previous owners. But when he comes upon an inscription in a volume of Robert Browning's poetry, he's less irritated than disturbed. This wasn't a gift to an unwitting woman. It was a threat - insidious, suggestively sick, and terribly intriguing.

Nothing overly memorable, but the narration makes it worth your while. Pleasant time filler. Will look for more by the reader, not the writer.

Historia
Ten years ago he killed my son. Today I married him. Ten years ago my darling son Jesse was murdered and our perfect family was destroyed. My strong, handsome boy, so full of life, became a memory, a photo I carried with me everywhere. But today I’m finally close to finding happiness again. My ash-blonde hair has been curled into ringlets. Carefully placed white flowers frame my delicate features. The small, drab chapel has been prettied up with white satin, and there are tiny red hearts scattered on the small table where I will soon sign the register with my new husband.

I know it’s free, but PLEASE SAVE YOUR TIME!!!! SKIP!!!!
Revisado: 02-15-22
It’s free for a reason.
I listen to a ton of books easily 2-4 a week, so I’ll put up with less than average - and since I enjoyed the widow by this author, I slogged my way thru this one. The only good thing was the narration, everything else was just so, so, so bad. All of the characters are unpleasant minus the ‘murderer’, Tom, who spent 10yrs for punching his friend outside a club..
Tom’s mom acted as though she was being a 10yr old home from prison, not a 28yr old man
Tom’s dad hates Tom… no explanation ever given. Tom’s parents also don’t like each other.
Bridget is a middle aged milf obsessed with staying young.
Coral is dull. Her son is a typical troubled little sh*t bully…
The twist is absurdly obvious.
The plot is ridiculously dull given the premise - it truly takes to abt chapter 40 for anything beyond everyone whining abt an older woman marrying a younger man. Narration was the only saving grace. The book was easily 4xs as long as it needed to be…
And in the end you’re left still wanting to smack every single character who’s still standing. Don’t do it to yourself. White noise will entertain you more effectively!!!!

Revisado: 02-14-22
The wounded damsel troubled by an abusive ex and a lost child is a bit much… I’m only to abt chapter 7 but the main character is just too pathetic to endure… narration is quite good and truly the only thing making me give this a shot, but it’s just too lifetimey to keep going.

Suspend your belief for the first6-7 chapters and it’ll pay off
Revisado: 01-07-22
Truly excellent narration - on par with imogen church minus the breathiness.
I’ll save the next reader a bit of frustration and say there IS a good reason the main character stays in the room with the landlords from hell; the writer alludes very vaguely but does not clarify until abt 1/2 way (maybe later) thru the book.
The book had a unique premise and while a few elements are a bit clique and drawn out, the story itself is well paced and enjoyable. Characters are rich and well developed. Will likely check out more by this author and definitely will seek out the narrator.

Historia
Amanda and Charlie are spending their first weekend away in months. They’ve rented a luxurious vacation house on Lost Valley Lake. Swimming, bicycling, and romance are the order of the day, and all is good. That is, until someone - or something - appears on the shore across the lake, just as the sky turns gray and the water chill and choppy. When the apparition, or whatever it might be, grows closer and closer, it soon becomes clear that there are certain types of evil that you can’t protect yourself from with locked doors and windows.

It’s ok… nothing memorable
Revisado: 01-05-22
The story was very brief and alternates from past to present… which leaves the characters a bit flat. Narration is decent but slow - highly recommend 1.1-1.3 speed to make it less robotic. There are very long (3-5 seconds min) pauses between chapters which made me check multiple times to see if the app had crashed.
If you need a quick listen this isn’t bad… but it’s also not anything memorable.
