Revisado: 04-16-23
I’ve had this in my library for months. Initially when I put this in my library I thought it was a book. I’m not going to lie, when I realized it was a pod cast, I was disappointed. MAN, was I wrong!! I’m five episodes in and can’t get enough! I’ve even got my mom into it! DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS POD CAST. It is soooo good 😊 and for the record, it’s the woods not a forest, lol. Love you guys🫶🏽

Cute little read but weak
Revisado: 03-06-23
It’s a cute read but it’s glaringly obvious that the author is not well read. Started reading her second book and realized she kept recycling the same four white old authors. And every time anyone of color is referred to it’s about the eldest daughter in her “white savior” role as a gritty documentary filmmaker. DNF the second. Can’t comfortably read or listen to any more of her books.

Interesting story line once you catch up
Revisado: 02-09-23
Initially the story was hard to follow. This could be just me because I was put off by the narrator’s whining voice. It was so odd how she was whiny during the narration and the lead character’s dialogue but was perfectly amazing with the dialogue with every other character!?
It’s a good read and I love the “Sliding Door” aka alternate reality theme. I would suggest reading the book if nasally whining voices aren’t your cup of tea.

Ruth, a Black woman who played a role in the show, is thrilled to be part of it—until she discovers her performance is all too convincing. Directed by Whitney White, a visceral and truly immersive audio experience that tackles issues of race, privilege, and cultural blindness.

Interesting, macabre, artful
Revisado: 01-30-23
It was like watching a play about a movie depicting a book. Some aspects where too gimmicky, exploiting the racial volcanic activity of the mid COVID pandemic/ quarantine, but it had good roots. I feel it would have been stronger without it, since it was not referenced initially in act one. But I liked the ending it was reminiscent of 9 1/2 weeks.

Right wing after school special
Revisado: 10-31-22
This book was so poorly written. But that’s not even the biggest issue about this book.
Initially, it was so annoying that a fist person narrative is written in APA format. This is a novel not a social science literary analysis. Use informal language so that the narrative flows more realistically. Despite this, I pressed on, then it got preachy about antiabortion issues and religion. This type of propaganda is what put this county in the predicament we are in today.
Dissuading women from their right to choose or listening to their own voice because others care more about the “religious” aka “moral” actions of carrying through with an underage unwanted pregnancy, rather than the health and future well-being of that young woman. They won’t have to raise a baby by themselves, they won’t have years of monetary lose because of child care and losing opportunities due to the prejudice of being a single mom and a black woman on top of that.
This book is illustrative of an era of how they kept minority women down and devaluated them in the job market so that they only could work backbreaking menial jobs and kept them in a consistent cycle of welfare and low paying jobs.
Women have the right to have a family when they are mature enough to have one and monetarily stable enough to afford one. Mistakes are made and they have the right to choose how to deal with that. These propagandistic literatures need to stop being written by black authors who have internalized and are perpetuating right wing ideologies.

Dumpednif for the rubbish film
Revisado: 09-22-22
The fact that I had to DNF it and opted to watch the rubbish film version with Dakota Johnson instead, I believe says a lot. The distracting and noisy “background”, the over/ under taking, and the bloody interlude music before each chapter is sooooo off putting and irritating that I get lost and miss the bloody story. I give up. This is a book not masterpiece theater.

Historia
This is the story of how America's first women soldiers helped win World War I, earned the vote, and fought the US Army. In 1918 the US Army Signal Corps sent 223 women to France. They were masters of the latest technology: the telephone switchboard. General John Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces, demanded female "wire experts" when he discovered that inexperienced doughboys were unable to keep him connected with troops under fire.

Skewed historical depiction
Revisado: 07-20-22
The author missed a major opportunity and a big chunk of history by not talking about the contributions of black female suffragist, I.e, Frances Ellen Harper, and Mary Church Terrell to name a few, whom the women suffrage movement relied heavily on, but aggressively suppressed acknowledgement of their contribution. And despite the fact that this book was published in 2017, there are still malignant traces of animosity of black men receiving the vote before white women in this author’s writing.
Still not a true account of history or about the participants of that history.
As for the narration, it was over performed and hard to listen to.

Hot and cold narrators
Revisado: 06-26-22
So, I’m only in chapter 7 and don’t know if I can finish the audio. If I can’t I’ll definitely read the book. The female narrator is sooo weird. How can someone be so good at character voice and dialogue and piss poor at narration? Her vocal fry and trying to hard to be sexy and, I don’t know, mysterious? Just makes it hard to listen to. The male narrator is okay, sounds too much like a teen age boy than a grown man, so sex appeal is a zero. But I love the story, it’s sooo cute and I love the cheese.

If you have any melanin or self respect skip this garbage
Revisado: 04-23-22
I don’t know when this dumpster fire came out but it is a legitimate example of an out of touch bigoted writer. Only got five minutes in but the main female character already displayed whiny self absorbed woe is me traits that gets old very quickly. And secondly, this writer obviously has never had a friend darker than vanilla ice cream because no black woman or child would ever insist on using their white friends id for anything. If you don’t understand the whole trauma and politics behind this then don’t write none white characters. And don’t write a black character as the angry vindictive friend from the get go. This book is so problematic from page one I don’t know how it got recommended to me or has a high rating.
