FNH gives a fantastic performance with great inflection, a pleasing voice, and with great diction.

A flawed document with a good performance

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would not recommend this audiobook. It's fast pace and the extensive use of acronyms make listening tedious and tiring. It was a chore to finish. The book would be better if someone needs to read this. It would make skipping the tedious sections easier.

What was most disappointing about Matthew D. Lieberman’s story?

The author bases his conclusions on questionable evidence and reports incomplete analysis. There was some interesting points but the author makes incorrect generalizations (no, everyone does not have a Facebook account (1 billion members perhaps but it is not mentioned that 6 billion people are not members). Nor does everyone watch reality TV and gossip. Some individuals simply don't need to be the center of attention and may prefer solitude. I won't even get into his absurd teaching suggestions.

What about Mike Chamberlain’s performance did you like?

The performance is very clear, however, the pace was a little fast and the very frequent use of acronyms made me unable to follow at times.

Was Social worth the listening time?

No, it was too long and tedious.

Any additional comments?

Perhaps the author could do a follow-up: "Why All People Are Not Wired The Same Way".

Any additional comments?

I liked the content for an overview of ancient Egypt although not all subjects were dealt with or dealt with adequately or accurately. Overall I liked the narrator's presentation. However, the usual and inconsistent pronunciation used - with diphthongs as if some of the god names went through a Great Vowel change - was jarring. This along with the missing illustrations of the book made me wish I bought the book instead.

Narrow Road narrowly passes

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 06-16-11

Although this title says this is read by one reader it certainly doesn't sound like it. When I got to the Narrow Road, which is not the first story read, I was surprised to hear that the reader had a much heavier Japanese accent. Although I can appreciate this approach it is a little hard to understand and requires constant concentration. Moreover I believe all the haiku are in Japanese - a real disappointment. I give this 2 stars only because it is Basho, but without the poetry, and it is the only version available.

Excellent book and narration

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 06-14-11

With only 1 minute of the preview available and with a couple 1 star reviews I was a little hesitant to buy this version. But with the Summer Sale a book like this for under $5 was too tempting to resist. So I bought it and I am very glad I did.

Firstly I could not tell you if the narrator embodies Thoreau's nature or persona. Nor could anyone else for that matter. He died in 1862. It is silly to say what they were.

Furthermore, I don't hear the choppiness, blank verse type reading mentioned. Neither have I yet noticed any mispronunciations or repeats. That doesn't mean there aren't any, it just means that it is not riddled with them.

What I do hear is a very natural way of telling a story. For the first time listening to an audiobook I feel like I am in a room with the author who is telling me the story instead of line being read from a book. It is this conversational interpretation that makes this reading so intimate, so natural, so engaging. And isn't that the feeling one should get by listening to Walden? For me it works. Highly recommended.

Performance ruined by muffled audio.

Total

Revisado: 11-13-09

In this version David Case's voice is completely muffled and almost unintelligible even on the highest quality setting. Equalization is ineffective because the higher frequencies are simply missing. In this state I can only recommend that it be avoided until Audible fixes the file.

Please avoid this recording.

The sound quality is very much below standard even at highest level 4 offered. I was unable to bring myself to listen to this for more than one minute. Do yourself a favor and look for another version. I am going to ask for my credit back on this one. (Please note that the one star rating is for the recording quality, not for the book or the reader)
