Historia
Martin Lorensen is a twenty-three-year-old counselor for disturbed teenagers. He’s bright, compassionate, attractive, and outgoing. He’s also—and this is the most interesting thing—not dead. Martin has improbably survived not one but two deadly disasters that claimed dozens of lives. The kid is riding one hell of a lucky streak. Two federal agents think there is something darker at play. Now that they’ve arranged to interview Martin, they want answers. Martin is ready to share everything he knows. One thing is for certain: when it comes to escaping death, luck doesn’t figure into it at all.

Great story just quick. Enjoyed the performance, kind of like a twilight zone episode-weird and sticks with you afterwards

Historia
Shari Franke’s childhood was a constant battle for survival. Her mother, Ruby Franke, enforced a severe moral code while maintaining a façade of a picture-perfect family for their wildly popular YouTube channel 8 Passengers, which documented the day-to-day life of raising six children for a staggering 2.5 million subscribers. But a darker truth lurked beneath the surface—Ruby’s wholesome online persona masked a more tyrannical parenting style than anyone could have imagined.

Writing was splendid and compelling and the story was heartbreaking. The maturity of growing into a person who has empathy and love is difficult when tied to institutions based in money and power. Thanks for sharing the journey.

Historia
One day, a cataclysmic event occurs: all of the white people in America walk into the nearest body of water. A year later, Charlie Brunton is a Black man living in an entirely new world. Having served time in prison for a wrongful conviction, he’s now a professor of electric and solar power systems at Howard University when he receives a call from someone he wasn’t even sure existed: his daughter Sidney, a nineteen-year-old left behind by her white mother and step-family.

Joy but karma and more Joy
Revisado: 03-10-25
This isn’t post apostolic as I first thought but rather a poem. The thoughtful progression of the rhythm reminded me that power is always within ourselves and that the darkness will always be wonderful and beautiful just like dark skin. Thanks for reminding us of the beauty of self in this love poem to black joy and caution to delusion. The exploration of a world of humans is so very refreshing.

Historia
Environmental devastation and economic chaos have turned America into a land of horrifying depravity. Assault, theft, sexual abuse, slavery, and murder are commonplace. And a zealous, bigoted tyrant has won his way into the White House. Directly opposed is Lauren Olamina, founder of Earthseed - a new faith that teaches "God Is Change". Persecuted for "heathen" beliefs as much as for having a Black female leader, Earthseed's followers face a life-and-death struggle to preserve their vision.

No matter when I read an Octavia Butler novel it is always timely and carries so much humanity and hope that you almost forget the inhumanity of reality mirrored in her stories. Everyone should know the parables.

Love is an interesting, fantastic story of cross starred soul mates who happen to be black. The details of history of black music and black horticulture was a wonderful surprise. I’ll read it again just for the Easter eggs and curses.

Probably one of the most tragic best written story I’ve read. I could relate to so much of it having spent time with holocaust survivors. The inhumanity was heartbreaking but told in such a thoughtful way. The multiple timelines and tales were woven into a masterpiece.

Historia
It was supposed to be the highlight of her career, the pinnacle for which she’d worked all her life. And as Hattie McDaniel took the stage in 1940 to claim an honor that would make her the first African-American woman to win an Academy Award, she tearfully took her place in history. Between personal triumphs and tragedies, heartbreaking losses, and severe setbacks, this historic night of winning best supporting actress for her role as the sassy Mammy in the controversial movie Gone With the Wind was going to be life-changing. Or so she thought.

I learned tons from reading about the life of Hattie McDaniel and the impact she made on history. Often black women are unseen and dismissed but not in this book. Although at points it was hard to read about the impact racism had on her life, I’m glad I know more about Hattie McDaniel.

The author has a magnificent way of describing her characters and the world around them. I swear I would know each character if they walked up to me and said hello. Moreover, I would know the taste, smell and sight of every drink, river and house the author described. The story was captivating and engaging. I can’t wait to read the sequel.

Detective Dan is a modern day British Columbo detective for me. The suspense and endings are always a thrill with Dan. Guess I’ll grab a cuppa and read the next book in the series or re-read it.
