I generally found this to be nearly as fun and engaging as the first book. Moments of heart and occasional existential reflections helped bring me along as well. I didn’t ever really get on board with the antagonist, their logic, their motivations, etc. it just felt a little forced and, in a way, nonsensical. The final climax felt kind of rushed and suddenly over. The entire competition made the stakes too high and improbable to feel emotionally manageable. But, all that being said, I loved the cleverness of the puzzles and fantastical adventures the heroes took. I’d recommend it as a light, fun read.

I will be rereading this several times in my life. It’s given me many new ways to think about racism. I’m eager to learn more

This is my first experience with John Jakes. At first I found the story difficult to relate to. As I became more familiar with the characters I grew to appreciate and strongly enjoy the book. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that the writing style of the author is not the kind of bland narrative of some contemporary creative writers, who are sometimes compelled to let the power of the story compensate for the quality of the words chosen. Instead, Jakes appears to have meticulously selected his words to craft a deliberate and flowing narrative. Though I found the story engaging and well written, I gave it 4 stars, for I am ranking this book on the basis of literature as a whole, and books such as 20,000 leagues under the sea are stiff competition. Don't let 4 stars dissuade you from considering this book, I rather meant the ranking as a complement against the greatest books of all time.

Great, but dense. Something from something.

A wonderful book. The science throughout can be heavy and a little difficult to follow. Krauss pulls no punches. I'd definitely recommend it, with the caveat that being at least mildly scientifically literate is probably a prerequisite for taking anything important away from reading. I think it's one of those books worth having for its own sake, like Dawkins' "God Delusion."

Interesting to the lay person.

As a trained scientist in the related field of behavior analysis, I found the conceptual component of "Carrots and Sticks" somewhat anemic. I think the lay person might find this level of accessibility preferable and subsequently find the text somewhat inspiring. I wouldn't, however, recommend it to most professionals in this area. I applaud Ian Ayres efforts and hope that he continues to devote energy to creating opportunities for lasting change in the lives of many people.
