Moore does it again

I am a fan of Moore's previous work and this new title did not disappoint. A well crafted story, with period accurate characters that were far enough away from cliche, along with witty dialog and prose made this a worthy listen. Heller did an amazing job narrating and bringing the world to life.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I'm not sure who would enjoy this. The book was marketed as a book that broke down Mindfulness for engineers and other linear logical thinkers, and I was hoping for personal stories of how such a person would disseminate those elements so that I could apply it to my life. What I got was anything but that. The book was riddled with examples that were complete fabrications of fiction-- imagine you are in a fender bender, you respond with kindness, turns out the other driver is really hot and you hit it off (see aren't you happier?)-- quotes from Yoda, and disrobing to find your inner 'Pooki' were all just too much for me.

Would you ever listen to anything by Mo Gawdat again?

No. It was difficult to get through this book.

Would you be willing to try another one of Mo Gawdat’s performances?

No. I generally like when authors read their own books, but this is a case where if I were the producer, I would have insisted the author demur to a professional. I occasionally bump the playback speed up to 1.25x if the narrator is slow. By the end of the book, I was up to 3x.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

There were several good points that come from Mindfulness that Mo reiterated, which are always good reminders. Those points are why I gave the book two stars, and not one.

Any additional comments?

The author hinted at his religious belief throughout the book, which I didn't mind terribly. However, the last 10% of the book was devoted to actively converting the reader into believing in Intelligent Design. I felt that this undermined the entire book, as it came across as a bait and switch. Mindfulness + ID = Religion (but I'm not that kind of religious person, he says). The book started strong, and ended with a whimper. Just a slow, long winded, less interesting Ray Comfort.

If you could sum up Jacked in three words, what would they be?

Outlaws, Scotts, Wanted

What other book might you compare Jacked to and why?

Masters of Doom. Kushner's first book on the golden age of gaming and programming, tells an almost equally gripping tale about the bad boys of the gaming world, and the controversy that surrounded them. Similar themes, but less focus on the technical aspects.

What does Adam Verner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Verner is a great narrator, and very subtle in his emphasis. Paper books just suck. I haven't read a physical book in years.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

You take the high road, and I'll take the low road, and I'll get to Los Santos before you...

Any additional comments?

Honestly, I would have liked to have had someone from the UK of Scotland narrate this instead, as most of the central characters hail from that region of the world. Was Patrick Stewart just not available? Still, Verner did a solid job.

Would you consider the audio edition of Masters of Doom to be better than the print version?

Yes. Wil Wheaton was the perfect narrator for this book in so many ways. Imbued with a sincere passion for the subject, his reading of the two John's story is gripping.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Carmack. I personally identify with many of his traits, very forward looking and intellectually curious.

Have you listened to any of Wil Wheaton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to him before.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Commander Keen Must Die.

Again, Wil Wheaton made this book absolutely sing. One of the best narrations I have heard in some time.
